Show Notes
Madonna’s new music video, “God Control,” is controversial for a good reason: it’s meant to wake us up to the
brutality of terrorism and gun violence. But, have we grown too deaf to hear it? Patience Carter, a survivor, of
the Pulse Nightclub terror attack has spoken out, calling Madonna “really insensitive” for depicting a massacre.
Indeed, images do reflect scenes that bear a striking resemblance to the Pulse tragedy, but that’s the point!
The music video begins with a warning, printed on the screen, which reads, "The story you are about to
see is very disturbing. It shows graphic scenes of gun violence...But it's happening everyday. And it has
to stop.” The video intercuts these scenes with scenes of Madonna sitting at her typewriter, writing the
lyrics, and scenes of her happily getting dressed to go out to the club, having fun dancing at the club until
the terror attack begins - gunfire, flashes of light, people screaming and Madonna lying on the floor with
blood dripping over her face.
