S5 E6 | Exploring NFTs in Art History w/Blake Finucane
On this episode of Rehash, we speak with Blake Finucane, Chief Strategy Officer at Emergent Entertainment and host of the Context Podcast with Boys Club, about the history of cryptoart and NFTs, strategies for NFT projects to succeed long term, and the role of NFTs in shaping the future of gaming. Emergent Entertainment is a leading metaverse and blockchain game studio.Blake is one of the earliest researchers of NFTs (non-fungible tokens). While most people started learning about NFTs in 2021, Blake has been studying NFTs since 2016, years before the ERC-721 token standard for NFTs was developed in early 2018.As a result of her innovative research on NFTs, she received a Canadian research grant to study at University of British Columbia, where she wrote her master’s thesis on how blockchain technology and cryptocurrency can be applied to the art world. It was one of the first ever academic theses to be published on crypto art, and we get to hear firsthand about it from the author in this episode. We also spend some time talking about web3 gaming and the role of NFTs in games. Blake is currently working on a game called Resurgence through her company, Emergent Entertainment, and she has some refreshing takes about how games should (or shouldn’t) structure their token models if they want to be successful.Blake has a wealth of knowledge and is so in tune with the culture of the space. She’s taken active steps to strike a balance between work and wellness, and she shares her best advice for achieving a healthy work-life balance while working in web3. S5 E5 | Onchain World Building w/Peter Pan
On this episode of Rehash, we’re speaking with Peter Pan, partner at 1kx, about how to identify successful early stage web3 projects, why certain NFT projects from the last bull run succeeded while others failed, and how we might be able to simulate real life physics in a digital environment. 1kx is an early stage investment firm that specializes in ecosystem growth. One of the hardest things to do in this space is to separate the hype from what’s real, and Peter does a great job of explaining how he analyzes various web3 projects to determine which ones will last the test of time. While most investors focus on the standard rhetoric of - you want to look at who the founder is, who the team is, Peter’s thinking goes much deeper into what are the foundational layers of the project and what it’s aiming to accomplish, and what impact can this project have on the broader tech space (not just the web3 space). We talk a lot about the role of community in shaping the success of a web3 project, and this led us down a rabbit hole of reminiscing and analyzing some of the NFT projects that rose to fame during the 2021 NFT craze. It’s really interesting to look back on some of the NFT projects I hedged my bets on back in 2021 and see where they are today (and how wrong I was about them). Finally, we talk about autonomous worlds, onchain gaming, and why Peter is a proponent of being able to simulate real world scenarios in a digital sandbox environment. We wrap up with some hot takes on community building that Peter shared in seemingly contradictory tweets back in late 2021 - early 2022 and give him a chance to explain the context in which he wrote those tweets. S3 E13 | Access and Inclusion Through Policy w/Sumedha Deshmukh
On this episode of Rehash we sat down with Sumedha Deshmukh from Crypto Council for Innovation to discuss the intersection of blockchain, policy, inclusion, and accessibility. Sumedha first became interested in blockchain through the lens of how it could support international development. As a natural skeptic, she began researching blockchain on her own before turning her findings into a video guide for other development practitioners. Over the course of this project, Sumedha became even more interested in the blockchain space and later made the jump by joining the World Economic Forum’s Blockchain and Digital Assets team in 2018.Diana starts off our discussion with a big question - wen meaningful policy? Sumedha explains how crypto’s history has been ironically plagued by barriers to entry and how that has impacted its adoption by the general public as well as its treatment by legislators. Although the space has developed drastically over the last decade, regulatory organizations are still waiting to see what real world impact blockchain could have before they give it more of their attention. S3 E12 | Let's Talk About Mental Health in Web3 w/Satvik Sethi
On this episode of Rehash we sat down with Satvik Sethi, Co-founder and CEO of Joincircle, a social media platform for web3. Satvik has been a mental health advocate since he was in middle school when he became the go-to person in his class to talk to when peers were struggling with mental health. He carried this passion for mental health advocacy with him through college and eventually found himself continuing to do so in the web3 space. It’s no secret that those of us who work in and engage with the industry are susceptible to burnout, regardless of market conditions. Satvik addresses this and explains the importance of mental health in general, and specifically how it applies to the web3 space. We discuss the value of open conversation around politics and agree that removing politics from web3 is impossible, as much as we’d sometimes like to. Rather, we should (kindly) embrace sharing the opinions we have in order to move the space forward. We switch gears to talk about SocialFi (which if you haven’t heard of it, don’t worry Satvik has you covered) and we discuss the “ultimate web3 social media platform,” Joincircle. Satvik shares his views on progressive decentralization and sufficient decentralization, saying it’s important for a project to start out centralized in order to be productive, but should still have its sight set on ultimately decentralizing and giving back to the community. During our talk, we also touch on the topics of interoperability, fundraising, and ever-present FOMO. 🔗 FOLLOW USRehash: https://twitter.com/rehashweb3Diana: https://twitter.com/ddwchenSatvik: https://twitter.com/sxtvikJoincircle: https://twitter.com/joincirclexyz ⌛ TIMESTAMPS0:00 Intro0:27 Sponsors4:02 Welcome Satvik!4:35 Satvik’s background5:54 Mental Health10:25 Mental health in web313:42 FOMO in web318:09 Politics in web327:32 Destigmatizing mental health31:45 SocialFi33:43 Joincircle38:41 Decentralization of joincircle43:32 Collaboration with other web3 projects45:37 Fundraising for Joincircle50:46 Fun Questions!58:03 Follow Satvik!58:36 Credits 🤝 SPONSORSLens Protocol: https://lens.xyzAvenue: https://avenue.placeGovrn: https://govrn.app DISCLAIMER: The information in this video is the opinion of the speaker(s) only and is for informational purposes only. S3 E11 | The Ultimate Use Case for DAOs w/Aaron Soskin
On this episode of Rehash, we sat down with Aaron Soskin, founder of Govrn. Govrn is a DAO contribution platform designed to enable DAOs to be defined by their contributors. By recording your contributions and allowing other DAO members to attest to those contributions, you can maintain ownership over your work and keep an on-chain record of the value you provide to DAOs.In this DAO forward episode, we cover a variety of topics from rage quitting and politics to the ways in which Govrn can help DAOs and their contributors. Aaron stresses the importance of DAOs being defined by the emergent properties that arise as the result of contributors providing value, and we discuss how Govrn allows contributors to own their work and get more meaningful validation for the work they do. We discuss the pros and cons of rage quitting, and Aaron explains why he’s a rage quit maxi. He also explains why it’s important for DAOs to enable divergence and convergence and shares that rage quitting doesn’t have to be permanent. We later explore the human aspect of DAOs and discuss the nuances of decentralization, acknowledging that technology can’t solve all human coordination issues. We discuss DAOs in the light of politics and what that intersection could look like. We acknowledge the recent events (FTX) and discuss what the future may hold for DAOs in the coming months and years - agreeing that not all DAOs need to be permanent. Aaron closes with speaking so passionately that his mic crumbles, starting SexySongDAO, answering some fun questions, and leaving listeners with how to get started using Govrn. 🔗 FOLLOW USRehash: https://twitter.com/rehashweb3Diana: https://twitter.com/ddwchenAaron: https://twitter.com/AaronSoskinGovern: https://twitter.com/GovrnHQ ⌛ TIMESTAMPS0:00 Intro0:28 Sponsors4:03 Welcome Aaron!5:16 Aaron’s background8:56 Contributor first DAOs11:11 Ownership over contributions16:31 Recording contributions18:25 Contribution language20:42 LinkedIn for DAOs24:50 Aaron is a rage quit maxi 29:21 Convergence and divergence in rage quitting34:26 Humans, tech, and decentralization37:34 DAOs and politics41:54 SexySongDAO 45:30 Real life use cases for DAO49:21 Why Diana likes DAOs54:56 DAOs in the current bear market1:03:48 Ephemeral DAOs1:07:54 Fun Questions!1:11:17 Follow Aaron! 🤝 SPONSORSLens Protocol: https://lens.xyzAvenue: https://avenue.placeGovrn: https://govrn.app DISCLAIMER: The information in this video is the opinion of the speaker(s) only and is for informational purposes only. S3 E10 | The Evolution of Media w/Steph Alinsug
In this episode of Rehash, we sat down with Steph Alinsug, Media Steward at Seed Club - an accelerator program for DAOs and DAO builders. When Steph first heard about crypto from a podcast, the concept of DAOs and social tokens clicked for her right away. With previous careers as a branding specialist and a community organizer, she was always looking for a way to bring those two passions together. Web3 offered an opportunity to do just that.Steph’s community-first branding approach lent itself nicely to her role at Seed Club, and she realized that the content she was creating wasn’t just content for the sake of marketing, but media that leveraged storytelling and community building to impact people with aligned values. This key difference is precisely what distinguishes content as we know it in web2 from the decentralized media of web3. We dive into all of the nuances surrounding content, branding, marketing, media, decentralized media, web3 media, media in DAOs, and decentralized content creation. Although we use some of these terms interchangeably, Steph breaks down how she distinctly thinks about them, and we discuss Rafa’s project Folklore - a leading example of community-first media. We double click on the human side of all of this as we discuss the inevitable hierarchy in DAOs, how media DAOs can progressively decentralize, ownership over the media you create, and the role curation plays in the decentralization of media. We also talk more broadly about conflict resolution and how imperative human to human relationships are as we explore new ways to organize ourselves and produce meaningful work in DAOs.We close out our conversation with a few fun questions and Steph tells us how to find her and Seed Club on Twitter. 🔗 FOLLOW USRehash: https://twitter.com/rehashweb3Diana: https://twitter.com/ddwchenSteph: https://twitter.com/cryptohun3ySeed Club: https://twitter.com/seedclubhq ⌛ TIMESTAMPS0:00 Intro0:35 Sponsors!4:11 Welcome Steph4:58 Steph’s background7:14 Web3 media10:10 Web2 vs. web3 media12:39 Web3 media, decentralized media, and media in DAOs16:35 Decentralized media vs. decentralized content creation21:05 Folklore 24:39 Ownership in decentralized media28:16 Progressive decentralization of media36:29 Relationships over actions41:25 Hierarchy in DAOs45:08 Fun Questions!52:30 Follow Steph! 🤝 SPONSORSLens Protocol: https://lens.xyzAvenue: https://avenue.placeGovrn: https://govrn.app DISCLAIMER: The information in this video is the opinion of the speaker(s) only and is for informational purposes only. S3 E9 | Building the Digital City of Cities w/Julia Rosenberg & Chase Chapman
In this episode of Rehash, we sat down with Julia Rosenberg and Chase Chapman from Metropolis to discuss all things DAOs, governance, and Metropolis.Julia started learning about crypto after being frustrated with web2 scaling models in her startup journey, which eventually led her to co-founding Metropolis (previously Orca Protocol.) Chase fell down the crypto rabbit hole while working in marketing and data analytics. After graduating college she dove headfirst into the DAO ecosystem and started contributing to DAOs full time. She eventually started her own podcast, On the Other Side, where she talks about the human aspects of web3. Eventually she met Julia and fell in love with Orca Protocol (now Metropolis) before joining the team there.Julia and Chase lay some groundwork for the episode by defining governance, not only in the DAO ecosystem, but much more broadly. We compare DAOs to digital cities and discuss the transition from corporate structures to DAOs, which transfers more ownership to members and gives them more autonomy over their work. We touch on the complexity of DAOs, the ways in which they are failing, the ways in which they can benefit humanity, and how Metropolis is enabling them to achieve better governance. Julia and Chase explain the Metropolis rebrand and help listeners understand how the protocol works on a very basic and tangible level. We discuss the importance of organizations being human centric and scalable, and the two share how they have seen DAOs evolve as well as how they think they’ll evolve in the coming years. 🔗 FOLLOW USRehash: https://twitter.com/rehashweb3Diana: https://twitter.com/ddwchenJulia: https://twitter.com/JulzRozeChase: https://twitter.com/chaserchapmanMetropolis: https://twitter.com/0xMetropolisOtherside Pod: https://www.othersidepod.xyz/ ⌛ TIMESTAMPS0:00 Intro0:32 Sponsors!4:07 Welcome Julia & Chase!4:26 Julia’s background5:50 Chase’s background8:32 Governance in digital spaces11:50 Corporate models vs. DAOs13:52 DAO governance is hard17:07 Digital cities23:00 Sovereignty in DAOs27:01 Orca rebranding as Metropolis29:55 Human centricity in DAOs35:04 How Metropolis works38:40 The evolution of DAOs50:17 Fun Questions! 57:54 Follow Julia and Chase! 🤝 SPONSORSLens Protocol: https://lens.xyzAvenue: https://avenue.placeGovrn: https://govrn.app DISCLAIMER: The information in this video is the opinion of the speaker(s) only and is for informational purposes only. S3 E8 | You Can't Buy Community w/Parker Jay-Pachirat
Parker Jay-Pachirat is Head of Community and on the Investment Team at Fintech Collective, a DeFi investment firm. She is also part of the Founding Team of Boys Club, a community and DAO helping women and non-binary individuals navigate web3. Parker had a pretty untraditional journey into web3, with a background in humanities and having studied critical theory at a liberal arts college. However, when Parker first learned about blockchain technology, she was so hooked that she decided to pursue a career as a crypto VC, and against all odds, she broke into her dream industry. We dive right into the episode by discussing off chain influences on DAO governance. Parker believes that code isn’t law (despite popular belief) and embraces the nuances of humanity in complex decision making. She believes that by utilizing off chain influences for the greater good of the DAO, you can actually create healthier governance models and more authentically represent the will of the DAO. We discuss the pros and cons of anonymous voting, and issues surrounding social capital, voter apathy, and token voting in general. Parker believes that there’s no one right way to structure a DAO, but instead thinks deeply about how DAO structure and governance can be implemented differently to best serve the unique purpose of individual DAOs. At Boys Club, Parker is directly overseeing the process of turning Boys Club into a DAO and she’s spent the last 11 months researching, creating, and implementing a structure and governance system that is specifically tailored to Boys Club. Parker’s shares what she’s most excited about as a VC - zero knowledge proofs and rollups. We also dive into how Parker distinctly differentiates marketing from community, with marketing being something you can purchase and community being something that is priceless. Parker shares her thoughts on post humanism as it relates to blockchain technology and inadvertently discloses that she is a Neuralink maxi. Through some fun closing questions we learn a little bit more about Parker personally - she loves StarkNet, her job(s), Boys Club forking, and the city of Berlin. 🔗 FOLLOW USRehash: https://twitter.com/rehashweb3Diana: https://twitter.com/ddwchenParker: https://twitter.com/parkerjaypFinTech Collective: https://twitter.com/fintech_ioBoys Club: https://twitter.com/BoysClubCrypto ⌛ TIMESTAMPS0:00 Intro0:40 Sponsors!4:14 Welcome Parker8:35 Nuance in web3 communities5:00 Parker’s background11:16 Social Capital and off chain influence 15:09 Anonymous voting 16:53 Issues with token voting 19:48 The ideal DAO structure24:39 Turning Boys Club into a DAO30:08 How Parker became a VC36:22 Parker’s investment thesis40:23 Marketing vs. Community Building 43:59 Post humanism and blockchain tech 49:16 Diversity in crypto 50:30 Rebrand anything in wbe351:18 Systems first, DAO tools second53:29 Community first, tokens and DAOs second54:54 StarkNet1:01:08 If Boys Club were another entity1:01:30 Boys Club fork!1:02:14 If money were no issue1:02:25 Biohacking1:04:38 If Parker could live anywhere in the world1:06:28 Follow Parker! 1:08:14 Shoutouts! 🤝 SPONSORSLens Protocol: https://lens.xyzAvenue: https://avenue.placeGovrn: https://govrn.app DISCLAIMER: The information in this video is the opinion of the speaker(s) only and is for informational purposes only. S3 E5 | How to Avoid Crypto Scams w/Taylor Monahan
Taylor Monahan is Product Lead at MetaMask, a crypto wallet and gateway to blockchain apps.As an early crypto adopter, Taylor has watched almost every cycle of crypto come and go. About a year after the Ethereum presale, she learned there were real blockchain apps popping up on the Ethereum blockchain. And even in these early days, she recognized the industry’s need for something critical — better wallets. Taylor pivoted into working on creating her own wallet with a more user-friendly interface and….actual buttons and stuff. This turned into MyCrypto, which was later bought by MetaMask. Taylor has been building web3 tooling and working on making wallets easier to use ever since.During our discussion with Taylor, we dive into wallet security and cover basic wallet 101 info. S3 E3 | Experimenting With New Media Models in Web3 w/Daisy Alioto
Daisy Alioto is the co-founder of Dirt, a daily(ish) newsletter about entertainment online that uses NFTs for community participation and governance. With over a decade of experience working in audience development at tech startups and companies like Time Inc, Daisy is well versed in content, editorial, marketing, community building, and more. This background prepped her to see the potential in web3 early on, as she was already familiar with the wide breadth of media structures that have popped up throughout the digital media boom. So when she decided she wanted to start a digital media project of her own, she and co-founder Kyle Chayka brought those traditional building blocks together with NFTs and web3 tech. Dirt was born.Today, Dirt consists of a newsletter, NFT art editions and a growing community of readers and token-holders. The project is carving out a space for ‘weird but intelligent’ content and giving community members options for how deeply involved they want to be - from occasional consumers to collectors and curators. During our conversation with Daisy, she walks us through the rapidly changing digital media landscape. She explains the troubles with our reliance on digital ads and platforms, the idea of product-audience fit, and the opportunities in web3 for media to be more community supported. S3 E2 | Non-Financial Use Cases for Tokens w/David Phelps
On this Episode of Rehash, we sat down with David Phelps. On top of being the founder of JokeDAO and an investor at Cowfund, David is also a writer, thinker, and talented shitposter. Contrary to what his boyish looks might suggest, David is a boomer who spent his prior life in the web2 and education spaces. After starting a tutoring agency that gave tutors a much larger slice of the revenue pie, David found his way into the web3 DAO space. Today, he continues to focus on projects that give creators and users the ownership and compensation that they deserve.JokeDAO is an on-chain governance platform used by web3 projects (including Rehash!) to create and run contests in a fair, decentralized manner. In the short time since it popped up, JokeDAO has been used by other creators like Packy McCormick and organizations like Tally and Jukebox to give their communities a stronger voice in what they’re making. As someone who spends much of his time thinking about and working on governance, David brings us on a deep dive into its nuances. We discuss the role of tokens in voting and online communities, why governance should be chaotic, and some of the unique challenges JokeDAO has faced. David also tells us about the intricate ways that JokeDAO could be used to create more community-aligned proposals and decisions. Aside from governance, David explains the potential of blockchains and projects like Cosmos and Celestia, gives his bullish argument for web3, and breaks down what he looks for when investing in the space. For good measure, we also make plenty of cow jokes, we take a look at the line between governance and moderation, David shills Cosmos, and he explains why beavers (real ones, not from cartoons) should be the official symbol of JokeDAO. 🔗 FOLLOW USRehash: https://twitter.com/rehashweb3Diana: https://twitter.com/ddwchenDavid: https://twitter.com/divine_economyJokeDAO: https://twitter.com/jokedao_Cowfund: https://twitter.com/thecowfund ⌛ TIMESTAMPS0:00 Intro0:30 Sponsors!4:48 David’s background11:54 Disclaimer13:09 Fun use cases for JokeDAO20:36 JokeDAO’s randomization feature21:53 Governance as content moderation25:11 Down-voting 27:50 Non-financial tokens34:18 Blockspace, token pricing, and proof of stake40:43 Cosmos and blockchain potential48:24 David’s investment thesis59:58 Follow David!
