Apathy, Babel-Building, & Godly Ambition

Apathy, Babel-Building, & Godly Ambition

Pastor Brian continues our verse-by-verse study through the Gospel according to John. Here in John 3:22–30, we witness our last substantive encounter with John the Baptist and learn that the best life is one lived for Christ's increase.

Pastor Brian instructed you to go through a series of questions to evaluate your life. Be sure to check your answers with someone who knows you well (your wife, best friend, etc.). Here are those questions:

1. Why do I exist?

2. In which areas has God particularly gifted me? In which areas has he not? (Asking questions like “What do I like to do?” can help you get at this one)

3. Do I tend more towards apathetic pride (squandering God’s gifts) or Babel-building pride (misappropriating God’s gifts to build a kingdom for my own glory)?

4. Is there a particular area of sin that needs to be repented of that would keep me from living for Christ's increase?

5. Are there habits or disciplines that are not in place in my life that I will need to live for Christ’s increase? What obstacles are keeping me from walking in these things?

What Was Given
When the Son Was a Serpent

When the Son Was a Serpent

Pastor Brian continues our sentence-by-sentence study through John's Gospel with part two of John 3:1-15. In this passage, Jesus shockingly compares himself to a snake, illuminating a curious text from Numbers 21 in the process and flinging open the door of our understanding of the cross.

A Stiff & Narnian Breeze

A Stiff & Narnian Breeze

Pastor Brian continues our verse-by-verse study through the Gospel according to John with John 2:23-25, where Jesus reveals his godlike knowledge of the human heart and the unsettling reality that there is a kind of faith that is not faith.

The Faith That isn't Faith

Pastor Brian continues our verse-by-verse study through the Gospel of John with John 2:12-22. In this section, we find out what it takes to make the God who is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love really, really mad, and why that matters for us all.

Kool-Aid, Cough Syrup, & Counterfeit Wine

Pastor Brian teaches a second time through John 2:1-11, asking "How do we get this New Covenant wine of gladness into our cups?"

The Life, The Light, & The Great Nots

Pastor Brian continues our sentence by sentence study through the Gospel of John with John 1:4-13, a passage that contains one of the most overlooked, yet joy-pregnant sentences in the whole book.

Friends, you can stop being an exhausted light-pretender.

The Life, The Light, & The Great Nots
In Which John Kills Your Jesus

In Which John Kills Your Jesus

Pastor Brian kicks off our verse-by-verse study through John's Gospel with John 1:1-3, where we meet the very eternity-dwelling Word of God.

In this sermon, the Apostle John may drive a knife through the heart of your Jesus. Not the real one, don't worry. See, some of us have a tiny, trivial, insignificant, cute, tame vision of Jesus, and here's the merciful truth: It won’t survive John’s Gospel. Not even the first three verses.
