S5 Ep 19EASTER: When you're at the end of your hope

A seeking heart is a pull towards something you can’t quite name. This Easter, where have you given up hoping? What wishes have you stopped making? What dreams have you let die by the wayside? The good news of Easter is that Jesus draws near in our disappointment and presents us with a new way through. S5 Ep 18GENESIS: Plans and Schemes (Genesis 16-17)

God will chase us down after our schemes fail. For this week’s episode of Genesis, Jessie talks to us about the story of Hagar and the faithfulness of God, as a God who sees and a God who will chase us down. A God who goes looking for all of his children, and who is close to us in our waiting. Listen to the whole episode at the Redemption Hill Boise Podcast wherever you get your podcasts. S5 Ep 17LENT 5: Study (mini-episode)

This week's spiritual practice is the practice of study. When I read Richard Foster's book Celebration of Discipline 25 years ago for the first time I almost skipped this chapter. It seemed like all we ever did as Church people was study. There was Sunday School and Sermons and Bible Studies and personal Bible reading. Every day, every week...we would open the Bible and study to understand the Bible. We believed that if we changed our minds with knowledge our whole lives would be changed by the knowledge itself. If we just knew what God wanted, then at least there was a chance we could do it.This was the "knowledge is power" era. Culturally in post civil rights era America we believed that education was the silver bullet, the one thing that could make society work. If everyone was smarter and knew more stuff, the world would be a better place. The church had Bible verses that we would trot out too: Proverbs 1:7 — "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge."Hosea 4:6 — "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge."John 8:32 — "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."Colossians 1:10 — Bear fruit in every good work and grow in the knowledge of God.In no other time in history was there more Bible knowledge than the end of the 20th century. It was the cultural apex of Bible knowledge because every corner of the church was studying hard, starting and building Bible Colleges and seminaries, training their kids in Bible quizzing and Awana memorization challenges. But here is the thing. The church convulsed, and heaved under the weight of the pressure to know more....because knowing more did not make us better. I meet up with friends who are around my age, were faithful followers of Jesus for 30+ years and left the church the last 10 years, deconstructed and vanished. They know more Bible than most of you. They can quote it to you in multiple versions. But knowing about God does not bring you closer to God...ironically. The demons know maybe even more about God than any of us do, especially those who enjoyed his presence in heaven before the fall. Knowing does not make you good.So is the answer to study less? No. The answer is to study differently — and for different reasons.Listen in to hear more!

S5 Ep 16GENESIS: Believe vs. Believe In (Genesis 16)

“And Abram believed the Lord and the Lord counted him as righteous because of his faith.” For our next episode in our Genesis series, Bob walks through portions of Genesis 16, in which God enacts the most formal covenant in the Bible. Bob urges us to ask the right question–not a question of whether or not we believe in God, but whether or not we believe him, if we believe the promises of God and act upon that reality. S5 Ep 15LENT 4: Solitude (mini-episode)

solitude, often referred to as "silence and solitude," does not mean "loneliness," nor does it mean "me time" like watching TV or doing an eye mask. In the same way as the previous disciplines we've discussed (fasting, prayer, and meditation), solitude is removing one thing to make space for something to take its place; in this case, it is stepping into quiet, alone spaces with the intent to listen and be filled up with the Father's presence. In his book, "Celebrations of Discipline," Richard Foster describes solitude like this: "Jesus calls us from loneliness to solitude… Loneliness is an inner emptiness. Solitude is inner fulfillment." Silence and solitude are practices that we can carry with us at all times, no matter our surroundings, though having extended times in quiet and silence is vital. It's actually about trust–trusting that God is enough for us when we are alone, and enough for us when we are with people. We do not have to prove ourselves with words or actions, because we have made a habit of resting in and listening to God intentionally in every moment of our lives, and acting from that place. We fill up in the quiet, and we then carry that "portable sanctuary" everywhere we go. Listen in for a solitude practice to engage with this Lent.

S5 Ep 14LENT 3: Meditation (mini-episode)

In its simplest explanation, meditation is centering our minds and hearts on the presence of God so that He can bring transformation in us, often in the form of repentance and obedience. It is both listening and responding. With fasting, we talk about withholding something in our lives so that we can replace it with something meaningful that re-centers us on the presence of God. Meditation is similar. While some forms of meditation emphasize emptying the mind or detaching from pain and hardship, Christian meditation begins with detachment but does not end there. Detachment is only the first step, attachment is the second. We lay down our day to day chaos, our questions, and the busyness of our minds, and we allow the presence of God, the living, breathing Holy Spirit, to fill us. We turn our attention toward Him.Most importantly, meditation draws us into personal intimacy with our Father. It awakens us to the reality that He is closer than the air we breathe.Listen in for a meditation practice to engage with this Lent.

S5 Ep 13LENT 2: Prayer (mini-episode)

Prayer is communing with the Father, Jesus and Holy Spirit. When we pray we talk and listen to God. We pray to connect to and feel closer to God. We also pray for guidance, for peace, for our own needs, and to intercede for others. It can be silent or spoken, formal or informal, by yourself or in a group. It can be done anywhere: at home, in the car, at work, while we play, in moments of frustration or excitement, at church, on walks, working out…really anywhere. Listen in for a prayer practice this lent.

S5 Ep 12GENESIS: The Land That I Will Show You (Genesis 12)

Andrew walks us through the story of Abram’s call to a new land, to abandon the old ways and step into a new season in faith. He connects this call with the calls we experience ourselves, calls to abandon the lies that surround us and move into what is true, trusting that God alone will hold us up and keep us safe. S5 Ep 11GENESIS: The Lie of Babel (Genesis 10-11)

Work hard. Stay safe. Make your name great. Grab hold of your life and make it into something people will remember and admire, or at least, into something your children can be proud of. Into something that might get us into heaven, if we’re lucky. These are words we often hear, words we often tell ourselves, and words that are, in the kingdom of God, laced with lies. Robert explores the story of the tower of Babel, cracking open our own little towers that we build over the course of our lives. We find together, that at the bottom of this bizarre and convicting tale, we find the good news of Jesus sitting there as a gift. S5 Ep 10GENESIS: A World Gone Wrong (Genesis 6-9)

Launched by the first murder, the new world God’s created has devolved into evil and suffering (not unlike how our world sometimes feels these days, too.) Jessie walks through the Flood narrative, providing fresh insight into the way we typically think about the story of Noah and the Ark– resisting the cute animated storytime narrative and centering it on the reality that God is not apathetic towards evil, and that in Jesus, there is a way through God’s necessary judgement. S5 Ep 9LENT 1: Fasting (mini-episode)

Welcome to our Lent series, where we're exploring what it could look like to practice different spiritual disciplines this Lenten season. Our first practice is FASTING. What is fasting?Biblically, fasting most often means abstaining from food for a spiritual purpose. However, the heart of fasting is voluntarily giving up something good to make space for God. That can include food, but it can also include media, comforts, habits, or distractions. Is fasting required for Christians? No. We are saved by grace and it is for freedom we have been set free! But Jesus speaks about fasting with some assumption that his disciples are engaging in it, which leads us to believe that fasting was common and perhaps expected from his followers (Matthew 6:16-18). There is no command for fasting, but there are centuries of evidence that fasting changes us in ways other disciplines do not. Richard Foster tells us, “More than any other Discipline, fasting reveals the things that control us.” Why do we fast? Biblically, we fast to- Humble ourselves- Repent and return to God’s ways- Seek guidance- Prepare for spiritual battle- Express grief and longing- Grow in dependence- Cultivate justice and compassionWhenever I fast, I am astonished at what bubbles to the surface of my heart and my life. Impatience? Yep. Irritation? There it is! Laziness? Lurking there all the while. All of the things I am so talented at hiding suddenly have no where to go but out. If you are eager for transformation, aching for nearness to your Father, and ready for a fresh awareness of His Love, try a fast this Lenten season. Let God fill your empty spaces and see what happens. How long should I fast?A simple and effective beginning practice is the 24 hour fast, or two meals. You would eat dinner, and then not eat again until dinner the next night. What should I do while I’m fasting?First of all, be normal. Jesus says, “But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.” (Matt 6:17-18)Second of all, replace what you remove! If you skip a meal, use that time to pray or read Scripture. If you fast from social media, use that time to sit quietly before the Lord. Let hunger (or the absence of your habit) become a prompt to pay attention to the Holy Spirit. What is God saying? Where is God making changes in you? Should everyone fast from food? No. If you are pregnant, nursing, managing diabetes, have medical conditions, are under 18, or have a history of disordered eating, do not fast from food.Let us know how your fasting practice goes this week!

S5 Ep 8GENESIS: Brother's Keeper (Genesis 4-5)

“God hears suffering; nothing is forgotten.” In a moving exploration of the story of Cain and Abel, the famous story of the first brothers and the first murder, Robert reminds us that violence and injustice is never hidden from God. As image bearers, our wellbeing and flourishing is intimately connected with the flourishing of one another; we are each others’ keeper. S5 Ep 7GENESIS: The Fall (Genesis 3)

We all know the story–the forbidden fruit, the disastrous turn of events in a perfect “utopia,” the snake, the woman, and the man. But do we actually know the right story? Andrew looks at the story in Genesis 3 with the lens of the God we met in the first two chapters, and explains how, if we have the character of this God in mind, the story changes completely. Listen in to the whole sermon wherever you get your podcasts.   Find more from Redemption Hill at  redemptionboise.org, or follow us on Instagram @redemptionboise, and Facebook at Redemption Hill Boise. redemption church, churches near me non denominational, church of redemption, redemption hills church, redemption church near me,non denominational churches in boise idaho,i church redemption, redemption hill boise, redemption hills, hills redemption, redemption hill church denomination, redemption i church, church of the redemption, church redemption, church boise, church near me,church near me now, church near me open now, church near me catholic, church near me Christian, churches near me,churches near me now, best churches near me,contemporary christian churches near me,church services near me,find a church, protestant churches near me,christian churches near me,evangelical church near me,bible based church, protestant church near me,church near me hours, open churches near me,american church near me,cool churches near me,christian church near me,best church near me,good churches near me,church service near me,contemporary church near me,bible churches near me,new churches near me,community church near me,late church services near me,churches near here, baptist church near me,non denominational church near me,contemporary church services near me,church open near me,house churches near me,churches in my area, born again church near me,churches near my location, small churches near me,modern churches near me,churches near me with evening services, bible based church near me,local churches, evangelical churches near me,black churches near me,catholic church near me

S5 Ep 6GENESIS: To Be Human (Genesis 2)

Did you know there are two creation stories in Genesis, back to back? The first one tells us about God, and the second tells us about what it means to be human, men and women together on this Earth. Jessie walks us through Genesis 2, and asks us the question: no matter your gender, to what is God calling you to tend? Where is God equipping you to do that work by drawing you near? Listen to the whole sermon wherever you get your podcasts.
