Active Stillness (John 15:1-17)

Most of us have been taught that the Christian life is about doing more, trying harder, and producing results. But in John 15, Jesus reaches for an image that flips all of that: a grapevine. He doesn't tell His disciples to work harder. He tells them to remain. Eight times in one passage, that's the word He keeps coming back to. What does it actually look like to live connected to something rather than just visiting it when you need it? And what if the fruit you've been straining to produce is less about effort and more about where you're rooted? This week on Rebuilding Faith, we're exploring what Jesus calls "remaining in the vine," and why active stillness might be the most countercultural practice you've never tried. The Posture Works (John 14:22-31)

Jesus says the Father is greater than him. His words aren't his own. He's doing whatever the Father requires. This episode sits with those claims rather than explaining them away, and traces the posture Jesus models: receiving from God and passing it on. It turns out that posture is contagious in ways that talking about Jesus often isn't, and Easter is what happens when the Father confirms it actually worked. The Spirit of Truth (John 14:15-21)

Jesus tells his disciples that after he leaves, God will send another advocate. And then, within the same breath, pulls them into one of the most bewildering sentences in the farewell discourse. In this episode, we look at the Eastern Orthodox concept of theosis and ask what it would mean for spiritual formation to be less about moral discipline and more about proximity, that virtue comes from participation rather than effort, and that the Spirit isn't just a comfort but an actual invitation to share in the divine nature. The Way of Jesus (John 14:1-14)

Most people know "I am the way, the truth, and the life" as a claim about Jesus' identity. This episode looks at what Jesus said it was supposed to lead to, which turns out to be more demanding than a statement of belief. A Buddhist monk shows up with a clear explanation of what it actually means to follow Jesus. And somewhere between Thomas's honest confusion and Philip's frustrated request, Jesus lays out a vision of faith as practice rather than position. The Platinum Rule (John 13:31-38)

Jesus gives his disciples a new command, and somehow it's both simpler and more demanding than anything he's asked before. Most of us know the golden rule, but Jesus isn't talking about that. He's raising the bar to something that, if we actually did it, would be unrecognizable to most of what gets called Christianity today. This episode sits in the space between Peter's boldness and his collapse, and asks what it actually looks like to follow Jesus when your theology of what that means turns out to be wrong. When Jesus Disappoints Us (John 13:18-30)

Most of us know the feeling when Jesus doesn't do what we hoped he would. Doesn't say what we needed. Doesn't show up the way we expected. And in John 13, two disciples face exactly that crisis, and they go two completely different directions. One of them is Judas — and before you mentally cast him as the villain, consider that his problem might be closer to yours than you're comfortable admitting. The other is a disciple so mysterious that scholars still can't agree on who he is, known only as the one Jesus loved. Two people. Same disappointment. Completely different responses. Today on Rebuilding Faith, we're asking the question that anyone honest about their faith eventually has to face: what do you do when Jesus doesn't live up to your ideals? Bad for the Ego (John 13:12-17)

Last week, Jesus used all His authority to do the lowest job in the room... He washed feet. This week, He asks a haunting question: “Do you understand what I was doing?” You can watch Jesus, read about Jesus, even follow Jesus... and still completely misunderstand Him. In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we wrestle with what it really means to call Jesus “Lord” and why you don’t get to worship Him and refuse the towel. If authority in your life has ever felt more about ego than humility, this one might hit close to home. Undercover Boss (John 13:1-11)

If you’ve ever felt burned by authority—or wished you had more of it—this episode is going to mess with your categories in the best possible way. In John 13, right after we’re told that Jesus has been given “authority over everything,” he doesn’t seize power… he grabs a towel. What would you do if you had unlimited authority? Fix the system? Crush your enemies? Finally, prove yourself right? Jesus kneels down and washes dirty feet (including the feet of the man who will betray him). If that’s what authority looks like in the hands of Jesus, then it exposes how small and distorted our versions often are. This episode invites you to rethink power, confront the ways we’ve confused domination with divinity, and consider what it would look like to use whatever influence you have the way Jesus does. God Without Clouds (John 12:44-50)

In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we wrestle with a bold claim: if you’ve seen Jesus, you’ve seen God. Not a cloudy, filtered, fear-based version of God—but God without distortion. What if Jesus isn’t explaining the Trinity here, but revealing the clearest picture of God we’ve ever had? And if Jesus says he didn’t come to judge but to save, what does that mean for how Christians talk about power, politics, and vulnerable people today? This conversation may challenge the God you’ve assumed and invite you to see what God looks like when there are no clouds in the way. Blind by Choice (John 12:37-43)

What if the real opposite of belief isn’t disbelief, but self-protection? In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we ask why people can witness truth, injustice, and even Jesus Himself—and still refuse to see. This episode connects an ancient Gospel text to our very modern moment, where clarity feels costly and courage feels rare. If you’ve ever wondered why faith can feel so tangled up with hard hearts that refuse to change, this episode is for you. All Who Live to See Such Times (John 12:27-36)

What do you do when faith feels heavy, and obedience doesn’t come with clarity or peace? In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we explore the moment when Jesus finally names what’s coming and admits, “My soul is deeply troubled.” As confusion spreads, God’s voice thunders, expectations collapse, and the cost of following Jesus becomes unmistakably real. Drawing a powerful line from the anguish of Jesus to our own troubling times, this episode wrestles honestly with fear, moral courage, and the question we all face: when the moment costs us something, what will we do with the time we’ve been given? The Tipping Point (John 12:20-26)

Jesus spends much of the Gospel of John saying, “My time has not yet come.” Again and again, he delays, deflects, and resists going public. Then, suddenly, everything changes—not because of a miracle, a confrontation, or a demand for proof, but because a group of outsiders shows up and says, “We want to see Jesus.” In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we explore why that moment becomes the tipping point, why Jesus redefines glory as the cross, and why the universality of Jesus was just as offensive then as it is now.  Watch the episode on video: https://youtu.be/1pJwx80wZ7o  ----------------- Want to read my upcoming book BEFORE it comes out on March 31, 2026? Some Dude on a Horse (John 12:12-19)

What kind of king are we really hoping for? In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we step into the tension of Palm Sunday — cheering crowds, shouts of Hosanna, and a Messiah who stubbornly refuses to ride a warhorse. As Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey, we uncover how deeply our ideas of power shape the faith we practice and the world we help create. From ancient expectations of military deliverance to our modern obsession with force and dominance, this story exposes an uncomfortable truth: the Jesus we celebrate is often not the Jesus we actually want.  Watch the episode on video: https://youtu.be/alj7CjfK6Ew  ----------------- Want to read my upcoming book BEFORE it comes out on March 31, 2026? Leave Her Alone (John 12:1-11)

This is a story many of us think we already understand... until we sit with it a little longer. In John 12, a woman’s extravagant act of devotion is met with a “reasonable” religious objection, and Jesus responds in a way that still unsettles the church today. Instead of debating logic or correcting the numbers, he protects the person. In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we explore why that matters, how easily faith can be used to shame rather than to love, and who Jesus might be saying “leave them alone” about in our own moment. If you’ve ever felt uneasy about how quickly devotion gets policed in the name of responsibility, this conversation is for you. The Right Kind of Danger (John 11:53-57)

What happens when the buzz around Jesus gets louder, but the danger gets closer? In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we step into the rising tension at the end of John 11, where rumors spread, crowds speculate, and everyone is wondering the same thing: Is he actually going to show up? As religious leaders quietly move from suspicion to resolution, Jesus does something unexpected—not avoiding danger, but refusing to be controlled by it. This is a conversation about wisdom, timing, and the kind of courage that knows when to step back without stepping away. The Ministry of Imagination (John 11:45-52)

Jesus raises a man from the dead—and the response is a committee meeting. In Episode 50 of Rebuilding Faith, we step into John 11:45–52, where resurrection doesn’t lead to celebration but to panic, because a clear view of Jesus threatens those in control. This episode explores why religion so often chooses preservation over faithfulness, how imagination becomes dangerous when power is at stake, and why the cross is never good news for people who like things the way they are.  Watch the episode on video: https://youtu.be/eqWFSDiu09A  ----------------- Join the online community and get access to exclusive content and experiences: https://www.jeremyjernigan.com/patron-sign-ups Trying to make sense of faith? When God Cries (John 11:28-44)

Jesus doesn’t stay composed in this story. He gets angry. He’s deeply troubled. And then he breaks down and weeps. In John 11, standing at the tomb of his friend Lazarus, Jesus shows us something we rarely talk about—a God who feels deeply and who doesn’t rush past grief or explain it away. In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we explore why Jesus’ strongest emotions matter and what they tell us about God’s heart.  Watch the episode on video: https://youtu.be/P6VDVihxCPk  ----------------- Join the online community and get access to exclusive content and experiences: https://www.jeremyjernigan.com/patron-sign-ups Trying to make sense of faith? A Holy Capacity to See (John 11:17-27)

What do you do when God could have shown up… but didn’t? In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we step into one of the most emotionally honest moments in the Gospel of John. Lazarus is dead. Jesus is late. And Martha says out loud what so many of us have only thought: “If you had been here…” We talk about the kind of faith that lives in the tension between hope and disappointment. We wrestle with unanswered prayers and why Jesus responds to loss not with explanations, but with an invitation. This isn’t about forcing yourself to believe harder. It’s about learning how to see differently. When Jesus Takes Too Long (John 11:1-16)

What do you do when Jesus doesn’t make sense? In this week’s episode of Rebuilding Faith, we open John 11 and discover that Mary and Martha weren’t the only ones frustrated by Jesus’ timing. He says Lazarus won’t die… then announces Lazarus is dead. He even waits two extra days before doing anything. But buried in this story is a detail most of us miss, and it's one that changes everything about what we assume God is doing. If you’ve ever wondered why Jesus takes so long to show up, or why your prayers feel unanswered, this episode might be uncomfortably relevant. God Among the Gods (John 10:34-42)

What do you do when Jesus quotes a Bible verse that completely dismantles the version of God you’ve carried your whole life? This week in Rebuilding Faith, we hit one of the strangest, most theologically explosive lines in the entire Old Testament—one most Christians have never even noticed. We’ll talk about why ancient Israelites didn’t see God the way most of us assume, why Jesus intentionally taps into a worldview we’ve forgotten, and how this strange little passage actually expands who God is—not shrinks God down. The Religionists (John 10:22-33)

What if the reason some people miss Jesus isn’t doubt, but religion? In this episode, we look at a moment in John 10 when people surrounded Jesus and demanded, “Tell us plainly.” But the problem wasn’t Jesus’ clarity. It was their expectation that he submit to their system. We explore why Jesus refuses to fit into anyone’s religious formula, why that made people reach for stones again, and why so many self-described Christians today might be better labeled “religionists.” Watch the episode on video: https://youtu.be/xGTb7o3I4WY ----------------- Join the online community and get access to exclusive content and experiences: https://www.jeremyjernigan.com/patron-sign-ups Trying to make sense of faith? What if Jesus wasn’t trying to protect our borders, but break them open? In John 10, Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd… but then says something that would have shocked everyone listening: “I have other sheep that are not of this fold.” What if the people we’ve been taught to keep out are the very ones Jesus is bringing in? Eyes Wide Shut (John 9:35-41)

What if the people who thought they saw God most clearly… were actually blind? In John 9, Jesus heals a man who was born blind—and then tells the religious leaders they’re the ones who can’t see. It’s a moment of spiritual irony that still hits close to home. Because the question isn’t just for them… it’s for us. Are we sure we’re seeing Jesus clearly? Or have we confused being right with being light? The Blame Game (John 9:1-7)

When life breaks down, our first instinct is to find someone to blame to remove our discomfort. The disciples did it when they saw a man born blind, asking whose sin caused it. But Jesus refuses to play that game. Instead, he rewrites the story of blame into one of creation and healing. In this episode, we explore how Jesus transforms guilt into grace and invites us to stop asking, “Why is this happening to me?” and start asking, “What might God do with this?” Click here to watch the episode on video.  ----------------- Join the online community and get access to exclusive content and experiences: https://www.jeremyjernigan.com/patron-sign-ups Trying to make sense of faith? Older than Abraham (John 8:48-59)

In John 8, Jesus pushes the religious leaders past their breaking point. They call him demon-possessed, mock his age, and throw stones at him. But instead of backing down, Jesus makes a claim so wild it nearly gets him killed: “Before Abraham was born, I Am.” What do we do with a God who doesn’t look like power, wealth, or influence, but instead looks like Jesus? Our Two Dads (John 8:37-47)

What happens when Jesus tells the most religious people of his day that their true father isn’t Abraham—or even God—but the devil? In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we look at one of Jesus’ boldest confrontations and why it matters for us today. Because while anyone can claim a spiritual lineage, Jesus reminds us that lineage isn’t claimed—it’s displayed. The question is: what does your life reveal? The Paradox of Freedom (John 8:31-36)

What if everything you’ve been taught about freedom is upside down? In John 8, Jesus makes a bold claim: true freedom doesn’t come from doing whatever you want—it comes from choosing the right Master. It’s a paradox that turns our cultural idea of liberty on its head. In this week’s episode of Rebuilding Faith, we explore how surrendering to Jesus is the only way to actually experience freedom. Echoes from Above (John 8:21-30)

What do you do when people come after you online, especially when they do it in the name of Jesus? In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we find that Jesus Himself knew how to stand up to unhealthy systems and call out bogus leaders, all without losing sight of who God is. If you’ve ever been told to “just preach Jesus” in a way that avoids conflict, this message will challenge you to see that sometimes following Jesus looks a little salty. Listen in and be reminded: looking like Jesus doesn’t mean staying quiet—it means standing for truth, love, and a God who is always with us. Sinners in the Hands of God (John 8:12-20)

What if God’s hands weren’t clenched in anger, but stretched wide in love? In this week’s episode of Rebuilding Faith, we contrast Jonathan Edwards’ infamous sermon with Jesus’ words in John 8. We’ll explore how a distorted picture of God leads to fear and despair, while a Jesus-looking God invites us into life, light, and healing. You’ll discover why seeing Jesus in the Old Testament, in the New Testament, and as the Resurrected Christ today can reshape everything you believe about God.  Click here to watch the episode on video. ----------------- Join the online community and get access to exclusive content and experiences: https://www.jeremyjernigan.com/patron-sign-ups Trying to make sense of faith? Waking Up in the Wrong Tent (John 8:1-11)

What happens when your worst day collides with Jesus? In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we step into one of the rawest moments in John 8—a woman dragged into the temple, shamed, and facing death. The religious leaders thought they had the perfect trap for Jesus, but instead, he flips the script, turns the spotlight onto the accusers, and offers the woman something she never saw coming: grace. Along the way, we’ll explore why this story might have hit close to home for Jesus himself, what he could have been writing in the dust, and why the gospel always shifts the focus from condemnation to restoration. Becoming the Other (John 7:40-53)

What happens when you speak up for someone else? In John 7, we watch Nicodemus risk his reputation to defend Jesus, only to be mocked and lumped in with the very person he’s standing up for. The truth is, whenever you love the other, you often become the other. In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we explore what it means to cross the line from “us” to “them,” and why real love always calls us to use our voice—even if it costs us. A River Runs Through It (John 7:37-39)

What if your deepest thirst could finally be satisfied? At the end of an eight-day festival all about water, Jesus stands up and shouts an offer no one saw coming: “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!” This was a bold claim to be the very source of life itself. In this episode, we’ll step into the drama of John 7, unpack why Jesus’ timing and words were so shocking, and explore what it means for you when the things you’ve been chasing still leave you empty. A Scorpion and a Missing Sock (John 7:25-36)

Ever feel like Jesus doesn’t fit the mold you were taught to expect? You're not alone. In this episode, we explore a moment in John 7 when people couldn’t accept Jesus precisely because they recognized him. He was too familiar to be the Messiah they were waiting for. It turns out that Jesus rarely shows up the way we expect him to. What if the biggest obstacle to recognizing Jesus in your life is… your idea of Jesus? The Sin of Inconsistency (John 7:11-24)

Why are we so quick to point out the faults of others, but so slow to see those same issues in ourselves? In this episode, we explore one of Jesus’ most relevant critiques—not of sin in general, but of inconsistent faith. From a crowd confused by Jesus’ authority to religious leaders upset over a Sabbath healing, the deeper issue is clear: they didn’t apply their beliefs consistently. And neither do we. The Enemy of Spiritual Life (John 7:1-10)

What if the biggest threat to your spiritual life isn’t sin, doubt, or even suffering... but your schedule? In this episode, we look at how Jesus responds to danger, pressure, and a push for fame (and what that reveals about the pace of our own lives). His brothers mock him. His hometown isn’t safe. But Jesus refuses to rush. We unpack what it means when Dallas Willard says, “Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day,” and how learning to slow down might be the most Christlike thing we can do. Chew On This (John 6:51-59)

Jesus said what?! This week on Rebuilding Faith, we explore one of the strangest things Jesus ever said (an invitation to eat his flesh and drink his blood). Yep, it sounded bizarre then and still raises eyebrows today. But what if this graphic metaphor is actually a profound invitation to find real life? In this episode, we unpack the cannibal rumors of the early church, the scandal of chewing Jesus, and why discomfort might be the doorway to deeper faith. More than a Meal (John 6:35-50)

What if we’ve misunderstood what it really means to follow Jesus? In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, I unpack a deceptively simple statement from Jesus: “I am the bread of life.” But this isn’t just about carbs and cravings—it’s about the deep hunger in our souls that food can’t satisfy. We explore why anything we add to Jesus ultimately detracts from our experience with him, how bad theology and familiarity distort the face of Christianity, and why people walked away from Jesus when he didn’t fit their expectations. Show Us a Sign (John 6:22-34)

What if your spiritual hunger was being fed in all the wrong ways? In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, we follow the crowd chasing after Jesus, not because they want truth, but because they want dinner. After all, he just fed thousands of them with a boy’s lunch. But when they ask for another miracle, Jesus calls out their motives. We’ll challenge the assumptions of prosperity gospel thinking, explore why Jesus refuses to be a vending machine of blessings, and unpack the powerful truth that Jesus is not the means to an end—he is the end. Novels and Cookbooks (John 5:31-47)

What if the way you’ve been reading the Bible is actually keeping you from seeing Jesus? In this episode of Rebuilding Faith, I unpack one of the most paradigm-shifting things Jesus ever said. You’ll discover why we can’t treat the Bible like a cookbook, why the Ten Commandments in public schools might be missing the point, and how Jesus flips everything we think we know about spiritual authority. With insights from Greg Boyd, C.S. Lewis, and a Texas lawmaker’s ironic moment, we explore why life isn’t found in religion, morality, or even the Bible itself… but in Jesus alone. The Point is the Point (John 5:19-30)

What if eternal life isn’t just something waiting for you after death… but something you’re meant to live in right now? In this week’s episode, we explore a surprising literary structure hidden in John’s Gospel that reveals the central heartbeat of Jesus' message. Spoiler: it’s not about someday. It’s about today. Jesus says, “Those who listen… have already passed from death into life.” That changes everything.
