The first time five-year-old Sarah told her parents the closet was talking to her, they assumed it was the kind of thing young kids say when imagination blurs the line between dreams and reality.
After all, the only thing inside the closet was an old talking doll that no longer even had batteries. But one night, while Sarah’s parents were in the room with her, a small voice suddenly came from behind the closet door.
It said, “I love you.”
And when they opened the doll to check the batteries, they found something that made the moment even harder to explain. Because the doll had none.
