The Catholic boarding school had been built in the 1920s, when silence was considered part of discipline. By the time she arrived at sixteen, the nuns were gone — but the building still carried their rhythm.
After lights-out, the fourth-floor corridor never felt entirely empty. Footsteps moved with deliberate pace. Doors seemed to be acknowledged as they were passed. And one night, in the middle of a whispered conversation, a firm voice spoke from inside her dorm room.
Not angry. Not loud. Corrective. No one was in the hallway.
Years later, after the school closed and the stone façade was polished into luxury apartments, she returned to the same floor. Renovated walls. Softer lighting. New tenants. But the expectation in the air felt unchanged. Some buildings don’t need staff to enforce their rules.
