When Margaret was young, her grandad’s house changed in a way she couldn’t explain. Nothing looked different, but the familiar sounds that once filled the space were gone. One afternoon, sitting alone on the sofa, she became certain someone was standing beside her—close enough to feel, impossible to see.
She never went into that house alone again.
Years later, other stories surfaced within her family. An unfamiliar man appearing beside a parked car, then vanishing without urgency. A child in a cemetery waving and laughing at someone no one else could see. A workplace where doors opened, footsteps echoed, and figures appeared only to disappear moments later.
None of it felt threatening. Nothing demanded attention or reacted with anger. Whatever lingered seemed content to appear briefly, in places it knew well, before fading away again.
