Instead, she heard a voice behind her. No one else was home.
Later, strange things began happening in her small apartment. A library book she intentionally left in the same place kept appearing in impossible locations. Under the bed. Behind the toilet. Hidden inside couch cushions.
When she finally confronted whatever might be there, something laughed near the bathroom door. She cannot say whether the two events are connected. But she has been more careful about what she invites in ever since.
