Lana Murphy on the moment she realised she wanted to be a mum

When I first met Lana Murphy, there was one description that quickly came to mind: sunshine in a human. She’s fun, she’s warm, she loves a yarn, and so, it’s unsurprising that when she’s not with her son, she spends her work days as a journalist working for Channel 9.And while she’s now excitedly awaiting her second baby, she didn’t always want to be a mum. So here, we find out what changed and what she’d go back and tell herself about what to expect from motherhood. She also tells us about her early days of cutting her teeth in journalism by heading to the bush and living in her family’s caravan, and what it’s been like returning to a demanding job and preparing to go on parental leave 2.0. This is such a fun conversation and I appreciate the way Lana so honestly describes the push-pull that so many women face when it comes to the question of motherhood and what the biggest role of all might mean for their career.—Thanks for listening! Why you don’t need to have it all figured out with Roisin Tarrant

Roisin Tarrant might be one of the most requested Ready or Not guests to date. And sure, part of the reason is because she’s built an incredible online following and has been generous in sharing her motherhood and career journey to date. And of course, it’s partly because her interior projects are inspiring and there’s something so earnest about the way she shares parts of her life with us.But really, I think it’s her positive outlook on motherhood that draws so many mums in to listen when she speaks. And, it’s intentional – she made a decision early on that she was going to embrace motherhood as best as she knew how, and here we hear all about it. Plus, she tells us how hard she found her first return to work, why she’s comfortable accepting that her identity is nearly entirely wrapped up in motherhood right now, what it was like to find out she was having twins, and how she has redesigned her career life to fit in with motherhood. I already knew that she was great, but it’s fair to say I now understand why so many people wanted to hear from her. So let’s get into it. I’m Lucinda, this is Ready or Not, and here’s the warm and wise Roisin Tarrant. —Thanks for listening! Kath Carlin on feeling selfish for only wanting one child

When Kath Carlin finally decided to stop trying for a second baby, part of her was kind of relieved. The journey had been arduous, and privately, she felt like she was only meant to be a mum of one. She wasn’t quite sure she was allowed to say it out loud, but she wasn’t sure she even wanted a second baby. And then, she fell pregnant naturally. But her journey wouldn’t end there. There’d be a potential diagnosis on the cards, but ultimately, she would lose that baby, too. After that, she was done with trying and now, a year and a half later, she couldn’t be happier to be the mum of one child. It’s surprising to me that in 2025, this is still a pretty unique story, and here, we explore why. Where does that pressure to have multiple kids come from? How does she feel all about it now? Here, we explore this and so much more, including her incredibly successful career as a makeup artist and the hilarious birth story that wasn’t the red carpet plan she had in mind.—Thanks for listening! Monique Milenkovic on finding purpose through grief

E

After experiencing the stillbirth of her firstborn, baking became a sort of therapy for Monique Milenkovic. She’d left her corporate job to go on parental leave, her calendar was clear, and with no baby in her arms, her life took an unexpected life altering turn. That direction would lead her to The Cupcake Queens – her thriving business with eight stores and a delivery service across Melbourne. But if growing her business wasn’t stretching her enough, after the loss of her son Nicholas, she’d go on to have a further five children. And you might be wondering how – I know we sure were – but you’ll learn quickly, as we did, that Monique takes it all in her stride. She doesn’t sugar coat it, she’ll tell you it’s hard to navigate motherhood and business, but she’s also a glass half full type of woman. And so, this conversation was incredibly uplifting, and with so much devastating news permeating the news cycle, I think we could all use something uplifting right now. So let’s hear from Monique. —Thanks for listening! The hallucinations that tricked Chloe Cox into believing she wasn’t a good mum

What Chloe Cox talks about today might just be the bravest thing anyone’s ever shared on this show. After the birth of her first daughter, she was hallucinating. There was a toy dog in the room where she fed and it was telling her that she’d never be able to get her daughter to sleep, that she was a terrible mother. She was going about her day looking like a mum who was thriving. She attended a mother’s group and kept up appearances. But as night fell, she was in a world of pain and confusion. Here, we talk about how she got through that time, the beauty of the age gap between her two girls, the power of the positive postpartum and return to work that came with her second, and the importance of shared parental leave. This is an incredible story, told from someone who’s as kind and funny as she is brilliant and honest.Find her on Instagram here. Our code READYORNOT will get you 20% off your order over $AU85 at gotoskincare.com!Imagine losing your mum just four weeks before becoming a mum yourself. This was the reality for today’s guest Leoni Hess, and when she wrote to us as a longtime listener, we knew we had to share her story. Not only did she have to navigate this duality of life coming and life going and what that would mean for the start of her motherhood journey, but she also had to handle death admin, working, travelling between states, and preparing for parental leave, too. Here, we talk about the pressure of being the glue that holds a family together, why she – despite adoring her in-laws – found it difficult to have her mother in law around her new baby when her own mum couldn’t be there, and what it’s been like learning how to be a mother without her own. —This episode is brought to you by Go-To and their Very Luxe Face Cream. Holme Beauty founder Hilary Holmes on becoming friends with failure

From business and beauty to motherhood and childhood, we cover so much in this episode. You’ll hear about how childhood trauma and abuse has shaped her life and journey as a mum, how she built her cult brand Holme Beauty, why she hasn’t connected with the other mums at school, and how she’s learned to become friends with failure. ABOUT HILARY: Hilary Holmes is a straight shooter. She’s not here to fumble through the grey. She’s here to tell you how it really is. She’s also warm. She’s empathetic. And she cares deeply for the underdogs. And I think it’s this clashing of traits – this mixture of the things we expect women to be and not to be, the things that we’ve been told don’t work in tandem – that had Loz and I falling quickly in love with her.You can follow Hilary Holmes on Instagram here.—Thanks for listening! The Preatures frontwoman Isabella Manfredi on what we expect from female artists

I was 22 when The Preatures released ‘Is This How You Feel?’ and that song would go on to form as one of the true musical backdrops of my 20s. And here, ahead of returning to Australia shores, she’s here to tell us all about it – what it was like to experience the explosion of The Preatures, what she recalls about leaving the band, the metamorphosis of identity as both a musician and a mother, and why she just wants to look hot on stage when she gets back up there this winter. —Thanks for listening! Dr. Michelle McQuaid on how girls learn to doubt themselves while boys learn not to care

After growing up in a family overwhelmed with mental health challenges, violence, and drug abuse, Dr Michelle McQuaid just longed to be happy. And so, she went about ticking off the list that we’ve been told leads to happiness. Despite steadily fulfilling the realisation of a great career, financial security, good friends, a loving family, travelling the world and more, the life that looked great on paper internally looked like a mess of stress and chasing tail. So, she went back to school – to discover the latest science and to seek ways to thrive, even in the midst of the struggles we all encounter. Here, we talk about what she found out about people pleasing, how we socialise young girls and boys, and why we need to see struggle and pain for what it is. Plus, we find out about her big life – how she’s navigated what has been a big life – childhood trauma and leaving home at 16, a separation, big jobs both in Australia and overseas, her son’s autism diagnosis, and how she found compassion for her parents.—Thanks for listening! Steph Claire Smith on mum guilt, prolapse and parenting with ADHD

E

Steph Claire Smith is a force. Through her business KIC, and her own personal platform, she reaches millions of people every month. And while she may be a star, as those that follow her online will know, she keeps it real. She’s not performing for her community, she’s interacting with them. And while so much beauty and connection comes with that, there’s of course, a dark side that joins it too. There’s unsolicited advice and opinions, and as Steph has learned in the years since becoming a mum, there’s plenty of mum shaming, too. So, I wanted to know, how does she feel when the trolls tell her she should be at home with her boy instead of working? How does she drown out the noise? In this generous conversation, we cover this and so much more – we talk about how ADHD has shown up for her as a mum, how she navigates business with her co-founder Laura Henshaw, what it’s like to be the primary breadwinner, how she’s preparing for baby two, and how she avoids bounce back culture. This is such a great chat. I hope you love it as much as we did. Use the code READYORNOT for one month free when you sign up to Kic on a monthly subscription at www.kicapp.com.
