How to Protect Kids from Harmful Online Content

In this episode of Reading With Your Kids we dove into a much heavier topic than usual - talking to our kids about online adult content. I know, not the most fun conversation, but Greta Eskridge, the author of "It's Time to Talk to Our Kids About P*rn," really drove home why it's so crucial that we don't shy away from this. The reality is, kids are getting exposed to hardcore, violent content at shockingly young ages, often completely by accident. And that can have some really messed up effects on their brains and development. Greta gave some great tips on how to approach this with our kids - keeping it simple, making sure they know they can come to us if they see something sketchy, and emphasizing that it's not their fault. And she also talked about the rise of sextortion, where kids are being blackmailed with compromising photos, and how important it is to educate them on that too. Then we switched gears a bit and talked about AI - the good, the bad, and the ugly. Our guest, Kerry Gallagher, broke down how AI can actually be super helpful for busy parents, like with meal planning and trip itineraries. But she also warned about the potential for bias and misinformation in AI-generated content. The key is using it wisely and teaching our kids to be critical consumers of what they see online. Lots to unpack, but I'm so glad we dove into all of this. Our kids are navigating a wild digital landscape, and as parents, we've gotta be proactive about keeping them safe. Astronaut Hayley's Brave Adventure

What an incredible story! We had the chance to chat with Hayley Arceneaux, the author of the new children's book "Astronaut Hayley's Brave Adventure." Hayley's journey is truly inspiring - from overcoming childhood cancer to becoming an actual astronaut! Hayley shared how she was diagnosed with bone cancer at just 10 years old. But with the amazing care she received at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, she was able to beat the disease and even went on to work at the hospital as a physician associate, helping other kids with cancer. But Hayley's story took an even more incredible turn when she was unexpectedly invited to join the first all-civilian mission to orbit the Earth with SpaceX. After months of intense training, Hayley spent 3 days in space, an experience she describes as "life-changing." Now she's sharing that experience with kids through her new picture book. We also spoke with Michelle Person, the creator of the "Meanwhile in Africa" social studies curriculum. Michelle is on a mission to make history education more inclusive and accurate, highlighting the amazing accomplishments and perspectives of Africans and the African diaspora. Rather than just focusing on the negatives like slavery and famine, "Meanwhile in Africa" celebrates the rich history, culture, and innovations that have come from the continent. Michelle wants kids to associate Africa with "glory, prominence, and pride" rather than outdated stereotypes. It was so inspiring to hear about these two incredible initiatives that are empowering the next generation in different ways. Whether it's Hayley's personal story of overcoming adversity or Michelle's efforts to rewrite the narrative around Africa, these are the kinds of uplifting, eye-opening conversations we need more of. The Joy Of Imperfection

Mistakes? Bring 'em on! In this delightful episode, Jed Doherty chats with author and illustrator Eliza Kinkz about her charming new picture book, "MISTACO" - a celebration of imperfections and the beauty of embracing our flaws. Eliza shares how the book was inspired by her own experiences growing up, where she struggled to open up about her mistakes. She wanted to create a "safe space" for families to share their slip-ups without judgment. And what better way to do that than with a silly, taco-themed character named "MISTACO" - a nod to the Spanglish words Eliza grew up with. As an artist, Eliza's vibrant, chaotic style is the perfect match for this playful story. Jed praises her use of "joy, color, and chaos" - qualities that Eliza says were heavily influenced by the legendary Disney artist Mary Blair. It's a style that perfectly captures the unpredictable, messy nature of childhood. But "MISTACO" isn't just about the laughs. Eliza and Jed dive deep into the importance of teaching kids (and adults!) to embrace their mistakes. They share personal stories of how parental reactions can deeply impact a child's self-esteem, and why it's crucial to model self-compassion. Whether you're a parent, educator, or just a kid at heart, this episode is a delightful reminder that perfection is overrated. So grab a taco, get cozy, and get ready to celebrate your inner "MISTACO"! We also have a fun time speaking with Brenda Do, author of It's OK Not To Know. Brenda shared how the inspiration for the book came from observing her young nephew's hard reaction to making a mistake. This led her to explore the important lesson of embracing failure and uncertainty as a path to growth. Brenda emphasized the need to teach self-compassion to children, rather than pushing them to be perfect. She drew parallels to her own upbringing in the Asian-American community, where mistakes were often harshly judged. Brenda's book aims to celebrate curiosity and the freedom to not have all the answers - a message that resonates for readers of all ages. Jed and Brenda's discussion highlighted the power of using children's literature to promote empathy, resilience and the joy of learning. Picture Books That Tackle Big Ideas

Wow, what an insightful and heartwarming conversation we had on the podcast today! We were joined by the dynamic duo behind the new picture book "Home" - author Matt de la Peña and illustrator Loren Long. These two creative minds really clicked as they shared the story behind their collaborative process. Matt explained that "Home" explores the evolving concept of home, inspired by his observations during the pandemic. He was fascinated by how homes took on new roles and how nature started to reclaim spaces. Loren, the perfect match for bringing these big ideas to life, shared how he relished the challenge of illustrating profound themes. The two clearly have a deep mutual respect, often finishing each other's thoughts as they described their fruitful partnership. First up was Dr. Ran Anbar, a pediatric pulmonologist who discovered the incredible mind-body connection after working with a patient who could literally think himself into an asthma attack. This led Dr. Anbar on a journey to learn about the power of positive self-talk, inner wisdom, and tools like self-hypnosis. He shares these insights in his book "The Life Guide for Teens: Harnessing Your Inner Power to be Healthy, Happy, and Confident." Dr. Anbar explains the five keys to a good life - sleep, exercise, diet, social connections, and finding purpose - and how teens can use positive thinking to achieve them. He even demonstrates the surprising physical effects of words, showing how saying "I'm strong" can actually make your arm more resistant to being pushed down. Next, Jed spoke with Wayne McDaniel about his beautifully illustrated children's book "Children of the Great Light." This non-denominational spiritual story teaches universal lessons about the divine light within all of us, and the importance of sharing our unique gifts to help others. Wayne is donating all profits to charities that support orphans and foster children, making this a truly heartwarming project. Finally, we take a listen back to a past interview Jed had with Stenetta Anthony about her picture book "A Home for Sally," which follows the journey of a special needs puppy searching for a forever family. Embracing Dreams & Building Community

Hop on board as we chat with the delightful duo behind the charming children's book "Theodore, the Sloth Who Wants to Race"! JL McCreedy and her husband Sam join us from the beautiful country of Italy to share the heartwarming story behind their sloth-tastic tale. It turns out Theodore the sloth wasn't just a silly idea - he was actually born out of a low point in JL and Sam's own lives. As they were feeling frustrated with their own dreams and ambitions, comparing themselves to a determined-yet-slow-moving sloth sparked their creativity. With Sam's veterinary expertise on these unique creatures, the couple quickly penned the first draft, but the real challenge was bringing Theodore to life through illustration. JL openly shares her self-doubts and insecurities about her artistic abilities, but with Sam's encouragement, she taught herself to draw and the rest is history! Their conversation highlights the importance of perseverance, self-belief, and not letting perceived limitations hold you back from pursuing your passions. Beyond the book, we learn about JL and Sam's fascinating global adventures, living and working everywhere from Germany to China. Their travels have undoubtedly influenced their storytelling, which often celebrates community, tradition, and the special spaces we call home. We also chat with Seina Wedlick, author of Space For Everyone. "Space for Everyone" celebrates the importance of community and family traditions centered around the kitchen table. As Seina explains, the book follows a young girl who is anxious about moving to a new home, worried she'll lose the sense of belonging her family's large, welcoming table has always provided. Through the story, Seina highlights the everyday moments and memories made around the table - sharing meals, drinking tea, doing homework - that create a lasting sense of home, no matter where you live. Seina drew inspiration from her own family's experiences, including the special role their own expansive table played in their lives as they moved between different countries. By focusing on this relatable, universal experience, Seina hopes the book will encourage kids to reflect on what spaces and keepsakes feel most like "home" to them. Jed and Elly also dive into the themes of empathy, listening, and understanding different perspectives - core elements of Elly's writing. They discuss how books can serve as "windows, mirrors and sliding glass doors," allowing readers to see themselves, learn about others, and make meaningful connections. The chat also covers the importance of media literacy, as Jed and Elly stress the need for kids (and adults!) to think critically about the information they consume online. Elly shares her own "backpack challenge" exercise, which encourages people to decide what traits and experiences they want to carry with them. Throughout the conversation, Elly's passion for storytelling, libraries, and empowering young readers shines through. Listeners are sure to come away inspired to visit their local library, pick up "Same Page," and have thoughtful discussions with the young readers in their lives. We also welcome back author Pat Zietlow Miller to discuss her new non-fiction picture book "Unstoppable John." Pat explains how she was inspired to write the book after hearing civil rights icon John Lewis recount his experience as a 16-year-old being denied a library card in segregated Alabama. This pivotal moment sparked Lewis' lifelong commitment to fighting for equality and access, which Pat wanted to highlight. Pat emphasizes the importance of libraries as community hubs and the vital role librarians play in providing resources and services. Pat shares her admiration for Lewis and hopes the book will inspire young readers to learn more about his remarkable legacy. Throughout the conversation, Jed and Pat discuss the power of storytelling to build empathy and understanding, making this a must-listen for anyone interested in civil rights history and the transformative impact of books. Best of 2024

Get ready for an all star end oof the year episode of Reading with Your Kids! We had a really impressive lineup of guests, starting with 13-year-old author Orion Jean. Orion wrote a book called "Race to Kindness" about a young boy who uses kindness to inspire his community. Orion is wise beyond his years - he talked about how kindness can make a big impact, even in small conversations. It was awesome to hear how he's already making a difference through projects like donating toys, meals, and books. Next up was comedian Joe Ghetto, who wrote a new children's book called "Where's Bearry?" about his son losing a favorite stuffed animal. Joe shared how the story became a fun way for him to bond with his kids through reading. He had a great perspective on how writing for kids is a different creative process than his comedy work, but he really enjoyed the challenge. We also heard from author Rajani LaRocca about her new fantasy book "Sona and the Golden Beast." Rajani created this rich, Indian-inspired world and the story deals with some heavy themes around colonialism. But she balanced that with relatable characters and emotions that draw you in. I loved how she talked about putting her characters through tough situations to see how they'd handle it. And we met 15-year-old DeMarco Avant, who wrote a book called "Teenage Boss" to teach financial literacy to other teens. DeMarco has already accomplished so much, like taking college classes in high school. But he was refreshingly honest about still making mistakes with money sometimes. Finally, bestselling author Kendare Blake joined us to discuss her new YA book "Warrior of Legend." This is the conclusion to her "Hero Maker" duology, which is connected to her previous "Three Dark Crowns" series. Kendare shared how she loves putting her characters through challenging situations to see how they respond. Overall, this episode was a great mix of creativity, wisdom, and inspiration from authors at all different stages of their careers. I always love hearing the stories behind the books and how the writers put their hearts into their work. Live At The Writer's Loft

What a fun time I had at the Writer's Loft holiday book festival in Hudson, MA! It was great to meet so many talented children's book authors and learn about their latest projects. Janet Costa Bates was there celebrating her picture book "Time for Bed, Old House" - a sweet story about a grandpa who helps his grandson settle down for a sleepover. Janet shared how meaningful it was when a mom told her that her biracial son saw himself represented in the book's main character. Representation in kids' books is so important, and it's awesome to see more diversity. I also chatted with Helen Kampion about her book "Rolling on Down the Line" - a fascinating look at Lady Bird Johnson's 1964 civil rights tour of the South. Helen and her co-author were inspired by Lady Bird's courage in making this trip despite death threats, in order to promote the new Civil Rights Act. Sounds like an empowering story for young readers. Over at the "Cryptid Academy" table, author Howard Woolke told me all about his fantasy series featuring mythical creatures like golems, genies, and sphinxes attending a secret school. I love the idea of blending real-world mythology into an engaging school story. And Ellen Cohen shared the premise of her mystery novel "Searching for Lucky Number 3002" - a boy trying to uncover the truth about his donor-conceived background. Such an interesting topic to explore through fiction and give kids a window into different family structures. So many great books and wonderful authors at this event. From Hollywood Villain to Teddy Bear Pal: Jed Bernard Shares the Heartwarming Story Behind "Jeddy's Teddy"

If you're looking for a delightful new children's book to add to your little one's collection, you'll want to check out "Jeddy's Teddy" by actor-turned-author Jed Bernard. In this fun and insightful conversation, Jed chats with host Jed Doherty about his journey from the screen to the page, and the special bond between a boy and his beloved teddy bear. Jed shares the true story behind "Jeddy's Teddy," which he wrote this past July and released in October. As a child, Jed was quite attached to his teddy bear, Tommy, who became his best friend during a time when Jed struggled with a speech impediment. Jed fondly recalls using his imagination to take Tommy on all sorts of adventures, just like the kids do in classic books like "Where the Wild Things Are." The discussion touches on the importance of imagination and unstructured play in child development - something Jed feels is being lost in our tech-driven world. He emphasizes the magic that can happen when parents take the time to read aloud to their kids, using different voices and accents to bring the story to life. Jed also opens up about his own path, from overcoming speech challenges to pursuing a career in acting. He explains how writing "Jeddy's Teddy" allowed him to have more creative control, compared to the collaborative nature of his on-screen work. Whether you're a parent, educator, or just a lover of heartwarming tales, this episode is sure to leave you inspired.
