Known for her emotional ballad that became a wedding and pop culture phenomenon, Perri has now reimagined the song's lyrics to celebrate the unconditional love between a parent and child. Perri explains her careful approach to adapting the song, recognizing the need to soften the dramatic original lyrics into something more appropriate for young listeners. The book, illustrated by Joy Ruiz, follows the first few years of Perri's daughter's life, capturing the bittersweet moments of watching a child grow and explore the world. The creative process was deeply personal, with Perri's own daughters serving as inspiration. Her seven-year-old daughter Carmela is the book's central character, and now reads the story to her two-and-a-half-year-old sister Pixie. This touching family moment exemplifies the book's core message of enduring love. For Perri, the project was more than just a book – it was a way to honor the fans who have kept her music alive for over a decade. She feels a profound sense of gratitude for the way people have embraced her song, allowing it to evolve through different stages of life from a vampire-inspired love song to a gentle parent's lullaby. The musician-turned-author is already planning future children's projects, including another book and a potential children's TV show. Her commitment to creating meaningful content for families shines through in her approach to storytelling. A Thousand Years represents more than just a book – it's a testament to the power of music to connect generations, capture emotions, and express the most profound love imaginable. Parents and children alike will find comfort and joy in this beautiful adaptation of Perri's beloved song. We also take a listen back to our 2022 conversation with Children's Recording Artist Raffi. Fires of Identity, Rituals of Love

In this rich episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty explores two remarkable books that celebrate family, identity, and connection. First, he sits down with author Nancy McCabe to discuss her powerful middle-grade novel, "Fires Burning Underground" - a book that delves deep into the complex world of teenage emotions and self-discovery. McCabe's novel isn't just another coming-of-age story. It's a nuanced exploration of a young girl's journey through grief, identity, and personal growth. Drawing from her own childhood experiences, McCabe crafts a narrative that speaks directly to the often-overlooked emotional landscape of pre-teens. The book tackles serious themes like dealing with loss, questioning family beliefs, and discovering one's creative identity - all through the eyes of a relatable young protagonist. What makes this conversation truly special is the raw honesty with which McCabe discusses teenage experiences. She challenges the common misconception that kids aren't dealing with profound emotional complexities. From navigating supernatural curiosities to processing the death of a peer, the book offers a compassionate look at the inner world of young teens. Parents and educators will find particular value in McCabe's approach. She emphasizes the importance of creating safe spaces for children to explore their emotions, ask questions, and embrace their creativity. The discussion highlights how literature can be a powerful tool for starting meaningful conversations about identity, grief, and personal growth. Jed and Nancy explore how middle-grade fiction can serve as a bridge between children's experiences and adult understanding. They discuss the pressures young people face, the importance of creativity, and the value of intergenerational connections. But the episode doesn't stop there. Jed also welcomes Pamela Ehrenberg to discuss her heartwarming picture book, "See You Soon, Spice Box" - a tender exploration of intergenerational connections and cultural traditions. Ehrenberg shares the beautiful story of Silas, a young boy who connects with his great-grandmother through video conferencing during the Jewish Habdalah ceremony, a ritual marking the end of the Sabbath. The book beautifully illustrates the power of family rituals and the importance of staying connected, even when physical distance separates loved ones. Ehrenberg highlights the significance of representing diverse family structures, including single-parent families, and creating stories that help children see themselves and others in literature. Her approach emphasizes the "in-between" moments of life - those transitional spaces where connection and understanding can flourish. Both conversations underscore a crucial message: children's literature is not just about entertainment, but about building empathy, understanding, and connection across generations and experiences.

A Story Born From Friendship, Love & Courage

If you're looking for an inspiring new children's book that teaches important lessons about resilience, kindness, and courage, you'll want to check out "Brave Buzzy Bee." In this episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty chats with the delightful co-authors, Rima Fakih and Theresa Alhayek, about how this charming picture book came to be. Rima and Theresa's collaboration started when Theresa's previous book, "Dream Big Little Princess," caught Rima's eye. The two hit it off immediately, bonding over their shared experiences of raising large families and even having preemie babies on the same day! As Rima and Theresa describe their writing process, it's clear they have a wonderful, supportive partnership. They worked together remotely, going back and forth on every word to craft the perfect rhyming story about the brave little buzzy bee. And when an editor suggested flipping the ending, the co-authors embraced the challenge, ultimately creating an even stronger, more empowering tale. Want to Raise a Happier, Kinder, and More Curious Child? Start with Awe!

Wow, what an inspiring chat with Deborah Farmer Kris! This parenting expert really knows her stuff when it comes to helping kids (and us grown-ups!) keep things in perspective. Deborah started out as a K-12 teacher, but soon realized her true passion was parent education. She saw how modern families often lack the support networks that used to be more common, and wanted to find new ways to share practical parenting wisdom. That's why she created the "all the time" children's book series - picture books that tackle important topics like emotions, with tips for caregivers in the back. But the real eye-opener was learning about Deborah's upcoming book, "Raising Awe Seekers." Turns out, the emotion of awe has some amazing benefits for kids' development, like boosting curiosity, academic success, and even generosity. Deborah shared all kinds of fascinating research on where we can find awe in everyday life - from nature and music, to simply witnessing acts of kindness. We also had a listen back to a conversation we had with Ben Feller, the author of Big Problems, Little Problems. Every Child Deserves to Belong

In this episode of Reading With Your Kids Jed Doherty had enlightening discussions with two experts dedicated to supporting children in the foster care system. In speaking with children's book author Natasha Tripplett, Jed learned about her new picture book "Planted with Love," which draws from Tripplett's own experiences as a foster care social worker and her family's decision to foster her sister long-term. Tripplett emphasized the importance of making foster children feel seen, valued and worthy of love, even when they display challenging behaviors. Jed also connected with foster care veteran Dr John DeGarmo, who has fostered over 60 children, adopting 3. DeGarmo shared that while fostering is a major commitment, there are many ways the community can support these families beyond just becoming foster parents themselves. He urged faith-based organizations in particular to get involved, as the foster care crisis represents a key "mission field" right in people's own backyards. DeGarmo suggested providing meals, supplies, mentorship and more as meaningful ways to make a difference. Both Tripplett and DeGarmo highlighted the heartbreaking realities of the foster care system, with over 370,000 children currently displaced. However, their passion for uplifting these vulnerable youth and inspiring others to get involved was palpable. Readers will be moved to open their hearts and homes after learning from these two dedicated advocates. What Can a Goose & a Swamp Monster Teach Us?

On the latest episode of the Reading with Your Kids podcast, host Jed Doherty had the pleasure of chatting with two talented children's book authors - Lela Nargi and Riley Cross. Jed and Lela discussed the unique bond between Canada geese, and how Lela's story explores themes of love, loss, and resilience in the animal kingdom. Lela shared her passion for wildlife and nature, and how she hopes the book will inspire families to appreciate the beauty of the natural world, even in urban environments. Later, Jed welcomed Riley Cross to the program to talk about her new middle-grade novel, "The Swamp of Doom." Riley explained how she collaborated with her own kids to design the quirky characters, including a half-alligator, half-shark creature named Alacarte. The two discussed the importance of encouraging creativity and imagination in both children and adults, and how Riley's background as a high school language arts teacher informs her approach to storytelling. Throughout the conversation, Jed and the authors explored the ways that books can help kids (and grown-ups!) face their fears, build empathy, and find joy in the unexpected. The 139-Year-Old House That Took a Road Trip—And the Memories It Carried

If you're a parent or grandparent looking for a delightful new picture book to share with your little ones, you'll want to check out "Moving Day" by Teri Roach Drobnick. In this charming debut, Teri takes readers on a whimsical journey as a Victorian house in San Francisco embarks on a big move across town. As Jed and Teri discuss, the story was inspired by a real-life event where a 139-year-old house was painstakingly relocated to make way for new development. Teri was captivated by the news and quickly got to work crafting a kid-friendly narrative from the house's perspective. With her daughter's own resistance to moving fresh in her mind, Teri was able to tap into the emotional turmoil a home might feel during such a big transition. What really makes "Moving Day" special, though, is the collaboration between Teri and her talented illustrator, Jennifer Black Reinhardt. The two connected over Instagram, and Jennifer's vibrant, hand-drawn artwork perfectly complements Teri's lyrical text. In a touching tribute, Jennifer even incorporated Teri's late father, who loved running, into one of the scenes. Jed also speaks with author Sandra Salisbury about her new picture book, "The Baby Who Stayed Awake Forever." This humorous tale follows a baby who just can't seem to fall asleep, no matter how hard the parents try. Sandra shares how her own experiences with her young children inspired this story, and how she approached the illustrations to match the book's lively tone. How to Protect Kids from Harmful Online Content

In this episode of Reading With Your Kids we dove into a much heavier topic than usual - talking to our kids about online adult content. I know, not the most fun conversation, but Greta Eskridge, the author of "It's Time to Talk to Our Kids About P*rn," really drove home why it's so crucial that we don't shy away from this. The reality is, kids are getting exposed to hardcore, violent content at shockingly young ages, often completely by accident. And that can have some really messed up effects on their brains and development. Greta gave some great tips on how to approach this with our kids - keeping it simple, making sure they know they can come to us if they see something sketchy, and emphasizing that it's not their fault. And she also talked about the rise of sextortion, where kids are being blackmailed with compromising photos, and how important it is to educate them on that too. Then we switched gears a bit and talked about AI - the good, the bad, and the ugly. Our guest, Kerry Gallagher, broke down how AI can actually be super helpful for busy parents, like with meal planning and trip itineraries. But she also warned about the potential for bias and misinformation in AI-generated content. The key is using it wisely and teaching our kids to be critical consumers of what they see online. Lots to unpack, but I'm so glad we dove into all of this. Our kids are navigating a wild digital landscape, and as parents, we've gotta be proactive about keeping them safe. Astronaut Hayley's Brave Adventure

Hayley's journey is truly inspiring - from overcoming childhood cancer to becoming an actual astronaut! Hayley shared how she was diagnosed with bone cancer at just 10 years old. But with the amazing care she received at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, she was able to beat the disease and even went on to work at the hospital as a physician associate, helping other kids with cancer. After months of intense training, Hayley spent 3 days in space, an experience she describes as "life-changing." Now she's sharing that experience with kids through her new picture book. The Joy Of Imperfection

Mistakes? Bring 'em on! In this delightful episode, Jed Doherty chats with author and illustrator Eliza Kinkz about her charming new picture book, "MISTACO" - a celebration of imperfections and the beauty of embracing our flaws. Eliza shares how the book was inspired by her own experiences growing up, where she struggled to open up about her mistakes. She wanted to create a "safe space" for families to share their slip-ups without judgment. And what better way to do that than with a silly, taco-themed character named "MISTACO" - a nod to the Spanglish words Eliza grew up with. As an artist, Eliza's vibrant, chaotic style is the perfect match for this playful story. Jed praises her use of "joy, color, and chaos" - qualities that Eliza says were heavily influenced by the legendary Disney artist Mary Blair. It's a style that perfectly captures the unpredictable, messy nature of childhood. But "MISTACO" isn't just about the laughs. Eliza and Jed dive deep into the importance of teaching kids (and adults!) to embrace their mistakes. They share personal stories of how parental reactions can deeply impact a child's self-esteem, and why it's crucial to model self-compassion. Whether you're a parent, educator, or just a kid at heart, this episode is a delightful reminder that perfection is overrated. So grab a taco, get cozy, and get ready to celebrate your inner "MISTACO"! We also have a fun time speaking with Brenda Do, author of It's OK Not To Know. Brenda shared how the inspiration for the book came from observing her young nephew's hard reaction to making a mistake. This led her to explore the important lesson of embracing failure and uncertainty as a path to growth. Brenda emphasized the need to teach self-compassion to children, rather than pushing them to be perfect. She drew parallels to her own upbringing in the Asian-American community, where mistakes were often harshly judged. Brenda's book aims to celebrate curiosity and the freedom to not have all the answers - a message that resonates for readers of all ages. Jed and Brenda's discussion highlighted the power of using children's literature to promote empathy, resilience and the joy of learning. Picture Books That Tackle Big Ideas

Wow, what an insightful and heartwarming conversation we had on the podcast today! We were joined by the dynamic duo behind the new picture book "Home" - author Matt de la Peña and illustrator Loren Long. These two creative minds really clicked as they shared the story behind their collaborative process. Matt explained that "Home" explores the evolving concept of home, inspired by his observations during the pandemic. He was fascinated by how homes took on new roles and how nature started to reclaim spaces. Loren, the perfect match for bringing these big ideas to life, shared how he relished the challenge of illustrating profound themes. The two clearly have a deep mutual respect, often finishing each other's thoughts as they described their fruitful partnership. But it wasn't all just about the book - Matt and Loren also touched on the importance of not shying away from complex topics in children's literature. They believe kids are more than ready to grapple with big ideas, as long as the stories offer hope and resilience too. We also heard from debut author Alison McGauley, whose picture book "Kenzie's Little Tree" draws from her own family's experiences with chronic illness. Alison spoke passionately about the need to have open conversations with kids about difficult topics, something she learned firsthand. Her book aims to both reflect the realities of families facing health challenges and provide a window for those who haven't had that experience. It turns out Theodore the sloth wasn't just a silly idea - he was actually born out of a low point in JL and Sam's own lives. As they were feeling frustrated with their own dreams and ambitions, comparing themselves to a determined-yet-slow-moving sloth sparked their creativity. With Sam's veterinary expertise on these unique creatures, the couple quickly penned the first draft, but the real challenge was bringing Theodore to life through illustration. As a speech-language pathologist specializing in executive function skills, Mindy has a unique perspective on the challenges kids face when it comes to planning, organization, and time management. In this episode, she shares how she created the character of the "Time Snatcher" to represent the distractions and obstacles that can derail kids, especially those with ADHD or other neurodiverse conditions. She emphasizes that these skills continue developing until around age 25, and often lag behind in kids with special needs. That's where Mindy's expertise as a speech therapist comes in - she's dedicated to helping kids and families overcome these hurdles. Later in the episode, we hear from Lavelle Carlson, the author of the picture book "Quirky, the Quirky Cow: The Cuckoo Concert." Frankie shared the incredible mission of Clowns Without Borders - providing relief through the power of laughter in areas of crisis, both internationally and right here in the US. As she explained, clowning has this unique ability to transcend language barriers and bring joy to people experiencing trauma and hardship. It's such a beautiful and impactful way to make a difference. Azizi Tuere spoke about her "Because I Am" book series, which aims to redefine concepts like beauty, genius, and resilience for children in a positive, empowering way. She shared how her own multicultural upbringing and passion for community have inspired her writing. The third guest, Kao Kalia Yang, revealed that it was her father, a Hmong "song poet," who modeled the practice of "collecting the beautiful" - the beautiful things people say to each other.
