Showgirl Showdown: Maren Wade Sues Taylor Swift Over Album Title and Brand Similarities
Maren Wade, a performer known for her Confessions of a Showgirl brand, has filed a lawsuit against Taylor Swift, alleging that Swifts album The Life of a Showgirl infringes on her trademark and causes confusion among fans. Wade claims that Swifts album, which sold four million copies in its first week, copies the vibe, structure, and market of her brand, which includes singing, comedy, writing, and online content. Despite initially seeming supportive of Swifts album, Wade has since pushed back hard against what she calls reverse confusion, arguing that Swifts massive fame has led to confusion about who the true copycat is. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejected Swifts trademark application for the album title due to likely confusion with Wades mark and another showgirl perfume. Wade is seeking a court order to stop Swifts use of the name and imagery, as well as damages from the albums profits. Swifts camp has not commented on the lawsuit, which is now in federal court.
