Show Notes
After a year and a half, freight trains will resume operation on the Old Fort Loops in Western North Carolina, a historic railroad line that once linked east and west. Despite the challenges posed by Hurricane Helene, which caused landslides and damaged tracks, Norfolk Southern has successfully rebuilt the final fifteen miles. The line, originally built by prison inmates in the 1870s, played a significant role in Ashevilles growth, nearly quadrupling its population in a decade. The first freight run is expected in early April, with hopes for Amtrak passenger service returning to Asheville after nearly fifty years.
