Show Notes
Norfolk Southerns AS Line between Grovestone and Old Fort, east of Asheville, remains closed a year after Hurricane Helenes devastation. This fifteen-mile stretch, built 145 years ago, features steep grades, tight turns, and tunnels along the Eastern Continental Divide. Norfolk Southerns team has been working since last May to repair the damage, using drones, LiDAR, and over 140,000 tons of stone and 52,000 linear feet of steel. Despite the challenges, all seven tunnels have held up, and the line is nearing completion, ready for future storms.
