Ep 11Teen Thoughts on Coronavirus
FullWhat a week it has been! It’s amazing how quickly our world can change. Today in the studio, I am joined by Rebecca, Jenna and Hudson. I asked them to come on and talk about what emotions they are feeling this week. I thought briefly about doing a totally unrelated topic thinking that maybe people want something to distract their minds, but I decided not to because it just didn’t feel right-kind of like doing something fun when you know your friends are hurting. They talked about being a little afraid because they don’t know what is going to happen, what is going to get cancelled, what friends may get sick; and mad because they can’t hang out with their friends. It’s ok to have feelings like this. It’s a part of being human. But just because I am feeling upset- doesn’t mean I have a right to go out, because I feel fine, I’m just going to go out and make myself feel better and hang out with my friends. The people that have already gone through this are telling us to listen to the doctors’ advice and do what they are telling us to do.What’s a few weeks of your life?It is tough, especially for the seniors who don’t know if they are going to get to do any of the things they had planned. The uncertainty is so hard, even for the parents. We just don’t know what’s going to happen. Life is like that to a degree, but we feel like we have more control in normal situations. What should you do when you have feelings like this? Talk to your friends and family. Be willing to work through all your feelings. Find someone to help you talk through it. If your family or friends can’t help you, talk to your pastor or a teacher.Remember just because something is on the internet, doesn’t mean it’s true. What can you do to help the situation-find things that you can control-your schedule, your diet, find productive things to do. You will be tempted to stay up late and watch movies, but that is not in your best interest. This is going to be one of those moments that people talk about. Where were you when the Challenger exploded? Where were you when 9/11 happened? It’s going to be where were you when the Corona virus happened? We just wanted to let everyone in our Be Daring family know that we are praying for them and if they need us to pray for anything they can email us at [email protected]. This is something that none of us would have chosen. Things may not turn out the way that we want, but we are going to be ok. The human spirit is amazing, and you can handle more than you think you can. You guys might feel trapped and want to be back to your familiar routines, but you can do this and you can use this time to find the good and find the opportunities. So for our family this week was Spring Break, but we couldn’t really do anything because we were trapped in our house. But we made the most of it. Had some pool days in the cold pool, got some projects done, built some things, taken lots of walks, watched some TV. But next week we are going to kick it up a notch. Some of you may have heard me talk about the Brendon Burchard podcast that I was listening to the other day. He wasn’t even talking about what is currently going on in our world. He recorded it before all of this happened, but he was talking about transitions. He said, “How we handle transitions, is how we level up.” And that statement really hit home for me. Lots of hard things are going on right now, and they are going to continue at least in the near future. And we can sit around and worry and complain about all the things we are missing or can’t do, but what will that really accomplish? It will just frustrate us and make us depressed, or we can find the opportunity in the crisis. We can use this time to learn new skills, make some memories and change our lives for the better. So over here at Be Daring we’ve decided to take advantage of the opportunities. We’ve created a challenge for middle schoolers and high schoolers called the Level Up Challenge. We are starting next week and we would love for you to join us. If you sign up we will send you a daily email with a couple of challenges-an easier one and a harder challenge and some days have bonus challenges for the older teens. Ep 8Special Guest Josh Apple
FullOn podcast episode eight, we interviewed Josh Apple about what it takes to be a member of a Special Operations Force team. Josh serves in the Air Force as a Combat Controller. Combat controllers are rarely talked about, but they serve a vital role alongside other special operation force teams. These guys are the ones who call in the airstrikes, provide command and control, direct air traffic, and set up airfields, among other things. Josh has been a recipient of both a Bronze Star and a Combat Action Medal. He discussed what a young person can do to prepare if they want to join a Special Operations Force team. The most important part is being able to deal with the mental demands. He shared with us how to make it easier by getting yourself into a routine and schedule. We talked about how you have to decide how bad you want it and what your motivation is for doing it. If this is something that you want to pursue, do your research to find a position that you can be passionate about. Then start training so that you can exceed the required physical standard. Set goals for yourself and realize that it will not happen quickly. We also discussed how seeing the world and having experiences that test your endurance will give you greater confidence and self-respect. The military has training down to a science. When young people goes through military training, they learn that they are capable of so much more than they thought possible. When people willingly submit themselves to the process instead of fighting it, they learn what they can attain. We are so thankful for guys and gals like Josh who are bravely serving our country! Ep 7Who Has More Willpower?
FullOn this episode we discuss the last year on our No Sugary Drink challenge. A year ago, three of us decided that we were going to challenge each other to see who would be the first to drink a sugary drink. It became a battle to see who has more willpower. All three of us are still at it, and I'm going to share several of the tips we learned this year that apply to anyone trying to accomplish a goal.Tip #1-The people that succeed in life, do not succeed because they have more will power than others. They succeed because they have systems and plans that help them. For example, it you want to eat healthier or save money by packing a lunch, make it the night before or keep some healthy snacks in your car.Tip #2-Narrow your focus. Don't try to improve yourself in a bunch of different areas at once. You may need to improve in all those areas. However, if you try to do it all at once you will get overwhelmed and end up quitting all of them. Just try to work on no more than a couple of areas at a time.Tip #3-Find people who will encourage you. They don't necessarily have to be doing it with you, but they need to be encouraging you towards your goal. If a friend is always wanting you to do something that does not make you a better person, it's time to find a new friend.Commit today to working on one of your goals. It's amazing how quickly a year will pass. Will you look back with regret that you never started or satisfaction that you were able to improve yourself?

Ep 6Special Guest Zachary Reinhart
FullZachary Reinhart (who we have highlighted on the blog before: https://www.bedaringlife.com/2019/06/29/a-daring-profile-zachary-reinhart) joined us on the podcast to discuss teens in foster care. He gave us some insight into the confusing feelings and emotions that teens experience when they are put into care.Teens who are just coming into care struggle with the transition; we need to respect their need to privacy while they process through the traumatic changes they are experiencing. We also talked about just being present and supportive of teens going through this experience and being willing to “sit with them in the darkness.”We discussed how the people in his church have helped him heal and made him feel like he was not alone because of how much they care for him and all the foster kids in the community. He also gave us advice on things we can do to help teens in foster care who may be in similar situations. He discussed how he came to the conclusion that, “You can’t let anybody else choose your happiness for you. You have to consciously make a decision to wake up every day and say, “Who am I going to be today? Who do I want to be today?”The message he most wanted to share with everyone going through hard times – “God has not forgotten you.”If you like the show, please review us on your podcaster of choice! Ep 5Open Your Mouth
FullThis week on the podcast we discussed in more depth a principle that we had talked about in a past blog post: https://www.bedaringlife.com/2019/06/07/closed-mouths-dont-get-fed. I have been doing this more consciously recently, and have been amazed at the results. If you have a goal and can work together with someone to get it accomplished, take a chance and ask! This is one of the biggest confidence boosting things that you can do. Are you any worse off for asking? If you don’t ask, that’s an automatic “No.” The fear of being rejected often cripples us so much that it keeps us from our purpose. Most people are not the scary monsters that we make them out to be in our heads. Many people would love to help, especially if you ask politely and you consider what you can offer them in return. No matter what their answer is, always treat them graciously. How does this apply to you? Be willing to apply for the job or the internship. (Act like a professional when you do it. That’s a subject for another day.) Ask your cell phone provider for a lower rate. So many times we just think that we have to accept whatever the offer is, but I know people who have gotten their cell, utilities, car payments, and mortgage loan rates lowered just by asking. Ask that person you like out on a date. If you are struggling with a concept, ask your teacher for help. Be willing to take a risk. When you start making it a habit, you will realize it really isn’t that scary after all.If you like the show, please review us on your podcaster of choice!
