Most children understand sins of commission because there are potential consequences for disobedience, meaning they get punished for not doing what they are told. Children should know the difference between deism and deity -they are not the same! Moralistic Therapeutic Deism isn’t a religion like Islam or Buddhism but rather a combination of beliefs amongst American teenagers. The idea is that there is a distant therapeutic god out there that is watching that wants them to feel good about themselves, have good morals, and be nice to people. Children who are not brought up to know and love God’s word can be easily led astray. They could confuse the meaning of Deity with Deism. Deity is our one true God who created everything and sustains everything. Deism is a belief in a supreme being who created the universe but is not a supernatural deity who interacts with his creation. Do you know what being a gentle parent means? Are you a parent or grandparent that struggles with the four specific Proverbs that state the rod of punishment is appropriate when disciplining your children, meaning that we should spank a disobedient child? The four rods of punishment in Proverbs: “He who withholds his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him diligently.” “Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of discipline will remove it far from him.” “Do not hold back discipline from the child, although you strike him with the rod, he will not die. You shall strike him with the rod and rescue his soul from Sheol.” “The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child life to himself brings shame to his mother.” The rod was used for corporal punishment as King Solomon wrote these Proverbs to his son, who would become king one day. The word child meant someone between the ages of 12-18 and therefore considered a legal adult in society, which means these Proverbs were not written for children under 12. A gentle parent never yells or spanks when punishing; instead, they disciple in love, which leads to knowledge! This year, did you know that only 6% of Americans were said to have a true and pure biblical worldview? Sight, vision, and envision... all similar words with very different meanings! Sight is what we see through our physical eyes, and vision is the ability to process what you see and to think about or plan something. Envision is to imagine as a future possibility - to visualize the future. Therefore, it is important to help children learn how to envision their future by helping them understand that once they know who they are in Christ, they can envision their life as one living in the Kingdom here on earth! There are many ways we can help our children envision the vision God has for us - writing down the Bible verses that describe heaven and the Kingdom of God, making a list of what life would be like with and without Jesus, or reading specific Bible verses that talk about having the eyes of your heart opened. How can we expect our children to share God’s word with others if we don’t? Children are naturally curious because they are learning through every experience. According to the American Worldview Inventory 2021, nearly half of the millennials surveyed said they either don’t know, don’t care, or don’t believe that God exists. As adults, are we actively bringing others to Christ by sharing the Gospel? If we wish for our children to share the Gospel, we should set an example. If our children have a chance to tell a friend about Jesus, or the love they have for Jesus, we should encourage them and not rob them of the opportunity that will bless them and honor God. The curiosity of children greatly influences their desire to learn and engage! Children are naturally curious because they are learning through every experience. Children with high levels of curiosity are motivated to learn or accomplish something new for the reward of having mastered it. Science calls this hunger to learn and mastery motivation. It can drive young people to achieve new things without the need for external rewards. Lee Ann expounds on these tips on how you can help transform curiosity into motivation for learning: Create an environment that creates curiosity. Connect children’s curiosity of God’s world, motivating them to explore more. Help your child become the detective for the day. Sit down and write a list of what they are curious about. It would be best if you did not ignore your children’s inquiries; you may be stunting their desire to learn. Try not to be too busy to answer their questions and allow their curiosity to motivate them to learn and grow. A special Thanksgiving message... This past week we celebrated Thanksgiving! It is important to help our children understand that it is God's will for us always to be thankful every day, not just on Thanksgiving. This allows our hearts to become humble and appreciative even when it is hard to be thankful every day in this ever-increasing evil world. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 states, "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." And according to Deuteronomy 6, we are to teach our children to do the same. God's will for us is to take every day and every moment to rejoice, make merry (celebrate), and pray by giving thanks that we can rejoice and make merry. However, God is sovereign and in control of all things; he may be allowing something evil in our lives to sift out the sin that dwells within us, and that is why 1 Thessalonians 5 is so important to teach our children.
