Making Music with Nami Melumad, "Strange New Worlds" and "Prodigy" Composer Nami Melumad is the composer for the wonderful scores on "Star Trek: Prodigy" and "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," as well as the Short Trek episode "Q & A." Her knowledge and passion for music are matched by her enthusiasm and affection for this franchise. Nami told us about growing up in Israel and explained how her service in the IDF helped her when she arrived in Hollywood, the methods Nami uses to compose her masterpieces, scoring HBO Max's "American Pickle" with Michael Giacchino, which is sadly off the streaming service now (at least for the time being), Disney's "Far From The Tree," and some of her other work. This encore episode is double the size than a typical Trek Untold because it's actually two shows in one! This is because I first interviewed Lycia Naff at the end of November 2020, and nearly a year later, we did it again since her journey in Star Trek had just resumed. Lycia Naff is known best to Star Trek fans for her two appearances in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as Ensign Sonya Gomez from the second season episodes "Q Who" and "Samaritan Snare." Over 30 years later, Lycia returned to the franchise to reprise Sonya in "Lower Decks," only this time she was now a captain of her own ship, the USS Archimedes! Although Gomez was originally meant to be a love interest for Geordi LaForge, things didn't work out for Ensign Gomez after spilling her hot chocolate on Captain Picard. Lycia tells us the behind-the-scenes story about what happened to her character and what happened to the third episode she was meant to appear in that would have changed Geordi's character. Plus, memories of seeing the Borg in their debut appearance, working with the cast & crew, including having to spill hot liquids on Patrick Stewart, and why she believes Ensign Gomez never returned... until she miraculously did in the second season of LDS. In our second portion of the interview that took place a year after the first, Lycia discussed what got her out of retirement to take the role, what it was like reprising this fan-favorite character, and all the in's and out's of being on a Star Trek show again. You may also recognize Lycia from her role in "Total Recall" as the three-breasted mutant hooker on Mars! Lycia recalls working with Paul Verhoeven and Arnold Schwarzenegger in this iconic and memorable role, with some happy stories and one "explosive" tale. Lycia explains why she left acting and pursued journalism, leading to one of her biggest stories, when she broke the news about the Bill Cosby sexual assault allegations. We talk about the investigation, the fallout from this story, and how it changed the landscape of modern feminism. We also chat about her not-for-profit group, Drive-By Do-Gooders, and in this pair of interviews, we see what changed as COVID continued ravaging LA's homeless communities.
