Show Notes
On this episode of Car-Free Conversations, hosts Domenico and Saumitra welcome Eugene Rider, Vice President of the Florida Bicycle Association, for an energizing and informative discussion about bike safety, advocacy, and the future of cycling in Florida.
Eugene (yes, that’s his real last name!) shares how the Florida Bicycle Association works statewide to advance safer and more accessible bicycling through four key pillars:
Advocacy & Policy Influence – Working with state and local legislators
Infrastructure Planning & Partnerships – Collaborating with FDOT, MPOs, and local governments
Education & Safety Leadership – Delivering standardized, evidence-based cycling education
Organizational Capacity – Building volunteer and community engagement
Unlike local clubs such as the St. Pete Bike Club, the Florida Bicycle Association focuses on statewide strategy—connecting communities from the Panhandle to the Keys.
🚲 Bike Rodeos & Youth Education
Eugene dives into his passion: youth bike safety. As a certified instructor through the League of American Bicyclists, he has led:
80+ bike rodeos
4,000+ youth participants
6,000 helmets distributed
Bike rodeos provide hands-on skills training for children—teaching everything from properly fitting helmets to emergency maneuvers like avoiding “right hooks” and “left hooks.” Many children even learn how to ride for the first time at these events.
Listeners also learn practical cycling tips, including:
Why helmets expire after five years
How to properly start pedaling (10 o’clock pedal position!)
Why you should “always pedal” for stability
How to safely ride on sidewalks depending on context
⚡ E-Bike Legislation in Florida
The conversation also tackles upcoming Florida legislation separating pedal-assist e-bikes (Class 1, 2, and 3) from higher-powered e-motorcycles. Eugene explains why clear definitions matter for safety and enforcement—and advocates for youth education permits rather than restrictive licensing.
The focus? Community-based safety, consistent education, and thoughtful implementation.
🌴 Why It Matters for St. Pete
For a growing city like St. Pete, safe cycling infrastructure and education are essential. From bike racks to traffic gardens, from school programs to statewide policy—this episode connects the dots between local action and statewide impact.
