S2 Ep 1571S2 Ep1571: PET TIPS Rescue Pets Rejoice! The Humane Society of Tampa Bay + Humane Society of Pinellas Merger

Eckerd College correspondent Maddie Merrick reports on the Jan. 2 merger of two great pet rescue non-profit organizations - The Humane Society of Tampa Bay and Humane Society of Pinellas County that was announced Dec. 17, 2025. 👉The two longstanding organizations are merging, formally uniting their missions, teams, and resources to create a more compassionate and sustainable future for animals and families throughout Tampa Bay; becoming The Humane Society of Tampa Bay: Hillsborough Campus and Pinellas Campus effective January 2nd, 2026. The merger comes after years of collaboration, shared values, and a joint commitment to building a more humane community. By bringing their strengths together, the organizations will significantly expand lifesaving services, veterinary support, community outreach, and humane education across the region. “This merger allows us to save more lives and serve more families than ever before,” said Sherry Silk, CEO. “Together, we can respond faster to animals in crisis, provide greater access to affordable pet care, and deliver a deeper impact in the communities we serve.” Key Benefits of the Merger Saving More Lives By combining medical teams, shelter operations, and resources, the unified organization will expand access to veterinary care, improve crisis response, and increase the number of animals who find homes. A more coordinated system means more lives saved and a stronger approach to ending animal homelessness. Helping More Families Stay Together Through expanded affordable veterinary services and pet food support, the organization will help families keep their pets—reducing unnecessary surrenders and strengthening the human–animal bond across Tampa Bay. Strengthening Community Programs A unified volunteer and staff network will increase the reach of high-impact community programs, including TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return) for feral cats, and humane education efforts for children in schools and neighborhoods. These programs are essential to reducing community cat populations and inspiring the next generation of compassionate citizens. Building a Sustainable Future The merger will reduce duplication, streamline operations, and allow donor dollars to go farther. Shared costs mean more funding directly supports lifesaving programs and animal welfare initiatives. S2 Ep 1567S2 Ep1567: ARTS ALIVE St. Pete Catalyst's Bill De Young with Project Alchemy

For the first Arts Alive! podcast of 2026, four guests join St. Pete Catalyst's Bill DeYoung. That’s a record – and since they couldn’t all be in the studio at the same time (not enough microphones!), we conducted the interview via Zoom. They are dancers and choreographers with projectALCHEMY, the St. Petersburg-based nonprofit dance incubator and studio. Samantha Kedziora, Talia Demps, Esophia Higgins-Wilkins and Kirsten Standridge will be part of MIXED: Across St. Pete, a series of pop-up dance performances in public areas around the city Jan. 4-9.The seven neighborhoods on the visit list are Roser Park, Historic Kenwood, Maximo Park, Downtown, Edgemoor, Historic Old Northeast and The Deuces Corridor. Taking dance off the stage and out of the theater is one particular passion of company founder Alexander Jones – he calls it “the power of movement to illuminate the spaces we call home.” To keep the experience organic, company members won’t reveal any specific dates or times. If you're there, you're there. Each of the women discuss their feelings about dance “in the wild,” about the Mixed work they’ve developed (for themselves and other company dancers), and about Jones himself, as teacher, mentor – and friend.MIXed: Across St. Pete The project concludes with a ticketed closing event at The Studio@620, where the company will create a brand-new, in-the-moment improvisational work that reflects on the dance experiences that unfolded across the city throughout the week. This performance is not a repeat of the neighborhood pieces—it is a reimagining and expansion of the stories, landscapes, and movement research discovered in those spaces, interwoven with short dance films and live music by Darren McFarland. MIXed: Across St. Pete honors the beauty of St. Petersburg’s neighborhoods, the importance of accessible dance experiences, and the power of movement to illuminate the spaces we call home.January 4–9: Citywide January 10: Closing Event at The Studio@620 Tickets-$20 General / $15 StudentsLEARN MORE about Bill DeYoung and tune in every Friday on RadioStPete for Arts Alive during Lunchtime Conversations. S2 Ep 1558S2 Ep1558: PET TIPS Keep Your Fur-Baby Safe & Secure on New Year's Eve

In this episode of Pet Tips, host Nanette Wiser shares some tips for keeping your fur-babies safe and secure. To keep pets safe on New Year's Eve, create a calm, indoor sanctuary away from fireworks and guests, ensure they have up-to-date ID/microchips, keep them leashed if outside, and remove dangerous human foods, alcohol, and decorations like confetti, as loud noises and chaos can cause panic and escape attempts. Safe Haven: Set up a quiet, interior room with their bed, toys, and blankets to block sounds and lights. Mask Noises: Use white noise, a TV, or soft music to muffle fireworks and party sounds. Exercise Early: A long walk or play session before the festivities tire them out, helping them rest later. Maintain Routine: Stick to regular feeding and walking times as much as possible. Toxic Foods Keep alcohol (even spills), chocolate, grapes, onions, and rich foods far out of reach. Decorations: Put away confetti, tinsel, balloons, and decorative lights that can be ingested or chewed. Fireworks: Don't let pets near fireworks, sparklers, or party poppers; the debris is also dangerous if swallowed. #pettips #newyearseve #petsafety #pethealth #nanettewiser #stpete #stpetefl #tampabay #radio #radiostpete #cityofstpete #dtsp #downtownstpete

S2 Ep 1554S2 Ep1554: HISTORICALLY ST. PETE Rui Farias Bayfront Center Retrospective

In this episode of HISTORICALLY ST PETE, St. Petersburg Museum of History Executive Director Rui Farias talks about the history of Bayfront Center, a site now home to The Mahaffey's world class venue. Set along the downtown waterfront at 400 First Street South, the Bayfront Center complex emerged as one of St. Petersburg’s most ambitious midcentury civic projects. The waterside venue, consisting of a multiuse indoor arena and an adjoining theater later renamed the Mahaffey, officially opened with great fanfare on May 6, 1965. Designed to accommodate events of all kinds, the arena could hold up to 8,600 people depending on its configuration and was intended to serve as a cultural, civic, and entertainment hub for the growing city.Over its four decade run, Bayfront Center welcomed some of the biggest names in music and entertainment. Performers such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Jimmy Buffett, Johnny Cash, and the Grateful Dead all took the stage, cementing the venue’s place in the city’s cultural life. Beyond concerts, the arena hosted political rallies, business conventions, high school graduations, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and professional wrestling events including World Championship Wrestling’s 1995 Slamboree.Sports also played a major role. Local basketball and hockey teams competed there, along with the Tampa Bay Rowdies from 1975 to 1987 and the Tampa Bay Terror indoor soccer team in the mid 1990s.A major renovation culminated in a grand reopening on September 4, 1988, drawing an estimated 50,000 visitors. Despite its popularity, rising costs and newer facilities led to the arena’s demolition in 2004. The Bayfront Center’s legacy, however, lives on in decades of shared memories along the city’s waterfront.Explore more at the Museum 10am to 5pm Monday through Saturday or from Noon to 5pm on $6 Sundays! #HistoryStPete

Lunchtime Conversation host Nanette Wiser welcomed back Charlie Justice, CEO of the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce (TBCC) for a look back at 2025 successes (Taste of the Beaches, Chamber Leadership Institute, ribbon cuttings for new and reopening businesses) plus issues, news and events on America's Best Beaches- our Gulf jewels. Community/Chamber events here.👉 100+ businesses bounce back (Beachcomber, Jimmy B's, The Helm) plus newcomers like The Luce (former Postcard) coming in 2026. 👉 Focus is on Habitat - Home Ownership and Affordable Housing in general. 👉TBCC issues include the Thunderbird property, beach toll proposal (St. Pete Beach), parking availability and oil drilling in our Gulf. Here are excerpts from his most recent Beach Brief newsletters! Our partners at Visit St. Pete Clearwater are hosting multiple partner summits around Pinellas to share key tourism data, highlight VSPC priorities and opportunities for you to partner with our CVB throughout the year. One will be held January 13 at the Beach Theater on St. Pete Beach. Learn more and rsvp HERE Happy to hear that work is finally starting on the new Emergency Medical Services Building on North Redington Beach. They have had to deal with multiple delays beyond the storms to get this project underway. North Redington Beach, Redington Beach and Redington Shores will see improved response time and service with the facility. More about this facility and other NRB news can be found HERE Congratulations to Madeira Beach Interim Manager Clint Belk for hosting a well attended community gathering last weekend to discuss the best way forward on a newly acquired city piece of land. Dozens came together to talk about what's the best use for the $18 Million parcel at 150th avenue on the waterway. Bringing the community together early on and building consensus is a great way to go to ensure a successful completion. You can read more HERE We were disappointed to see that the city of Treasure Island rejected the ordinance which would have allowed the Thunderbird Redevelopment to move forward. Hopefully the community and city leadership can come together to decide the next step. We must allow our property owners, residential and commercial, to build back responsibly. Kicking the can down the road just delays our recovery. Several of our cities will be holding March elections. Every chamber has different policies on the role of the chamber during campaign season. I can tell you that while our chamber will never hesitate to speak up on policies or issues of importance to our members, we do not endorse candidates in contested races. We are grateful for those who offer themselves in service and want to partner with whoever is in office to move our communities forward.
