Cuando, el 10 de octubre de 1868, en su ingenio Demajagua, en Manzanillo, se lanzó a la lucha junto a sus antiguos esclavos, por la independencia de Cuba, él fue el primero en llamar a la lucha, de ahí que también se le considere el padre de la independencia.
