Next week marks eight years since the signing of the Revitalized Peace Agreement (R-ARCSS) on 12th September 2018, a deal intended to bring an end to conflict among South Sudan’s warring factions.

But today, the agreement is under strain, implementation has stalled, violence is on the rise, and political divisions remain deep. The UN and human rights bodies are urging urgent regional action and stronger pressure on South Sudanese leaders, stressing that the R-ARCSS remains the only viable path to stability.

In this Roundtable discussion, we ask: Can the 2018 peace agreement be revived, or is a new approach needed to de-escalate the fighting?

Joining Sani Martin to unpack these issues and more are:

  • Sarah Nyanath – Activist and Executive Director, Gender Equality South Sudan Organization
  • Edmund Yakani – Executive Director, Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO)
  • Dr. Abraham Kuol Nyuon – Assistant Professor of Political Science, University of Juba
