Fr. Peter dedicates this special Lenten episode to a full guided meditation according to the method of St. Peter of Alcantara, the great 16th-century Spanish Franciscan mystic and reformer. Drawing from his Treatise on Prayer and Meditation, Fr. Peter leads listeners through the six stages of Alcantaran prayer — preparation, reading, meditation, thanksgiving, offering, and petition — centred on the meditation on the miseries of this life. The episode closes with St. Peter’s magnificent prayer for the love of God, and a brief account of the saint’s life: his miraculous crossing of a flooded river, his role as confessor to St. Teresa of Avila, and his famous reply to a young nobleman lamenting the state of the world. A beautiful hour for anyone wishing to pray more deeply this Lent.
