Imani ya Afrika - Episode 16 - An African Caliphate
This episode explores a powerful yet often overlooked dimension of African Islamic history—the revivalist movements that sought to rejuvenate Muslims, reform society, and establish governance rooted in Islamic principles. Beginning with the reformist waves of the Murabitun and Muwahidun movements, it culminates in the remarkable story of the mujaddid Sheikh Usman dan Fodio. From humble beginnings in Gobir, his call for tajdīd transformed into one of the most consequential reform movements in African history—overthrowing corrupt rule, igniting a sweeping jihād across Hausaland, and establishing the vast Sokoto Caliphate. Spanning scholarship, struggle, tasawuuf, and statecraft, his movement reshaped religious life, political authority, and intellectual culture across the region—leaving a legacy that still resonates today.

Imani ya Afrika - Episode 15 - Inside a Mauritanian Mahdara
Beyond the famous story of Timbuktu, the intellectual world of Muslim West Africa was vast, vibrant, and deeply connected to the wider Ummah. One of the most remarkable surviving expressions of this legacy lies in Mauritania, where the traditional desert maḥāḍir still preserve a centuries-old culture of Islamic learning. Here, under the guidance of deeply erudite teachers, students memorise texts on wooden lawḥs, absorb knowledge through oral transmission and poetry, and live a rhythm of study, discipline, and spirituality that has changed little over time.

Imani ya Afrika - Episode 12 - The Islamic Dynasties of West Africa
The history of Islam in North Africa, Arabia, Iraq and the Levant is generally well known, and the great dynasties of these regions—such as the Umayyad Caliphate, Abbasid Caliphate, and Ayyubid dynasty—are readily recognised in both world and Muslim history. Yet far less attention is given to the Muslim rulerships of Bilad al-Sudan, the vast belt of lands stretching south of the Sahara Desert. Between the 11th and 16th centuries this region became one of the great zones of Islamic civilization, where powerful empires such as the Ghana Empire, Mali Empire, and Songhai Empire flourished along the trade routes of the Sahel. Muslim geographers and travellers including Al-Bakri, Al-Idrisi, and Ibn Battuta left rich accounts describing these kingdoms, their scholars, and their vibrant Islamic societies.
