La francesa Iréne Joliot-Curie (1897-1956, fue una física y química que se ganó el respeto del mundo científico, casi por definición masculino. En 1935 fue nombrada directora de investigación de la Fundación Nacional de Ciencias, después fue subsecretaria de estado de investigación científica.
