We will be using it to replace the high density polyethelene that lines the henhouse and egg hutches. It is a much more sustainable product and as a company, Carolina Coops want to move away from plastics and to a product that is better for the environment. It's during late summer into fall (and sometime even in winter) when your chickens may start to molt. Molting is a natural process where birds lose some to almost all of their feathers and replace them with new ones. Some chickens will have a heavy molt, while others will have a light one that you may not even notice. During this time, it's advisable to give your flock access to extra protein to help regrow feathers. This can be black oil sunflower seeds, scrambled eggs, tuna, or extra mealworms. Chickens that are molting don't want to be handled and their pin feathers (where new feathers grow out of) will actually make it uncomfortable for them. We tackle what to expect, how long it can take, and how you can help your birds during this time. We tackle parasites and pests within your flock. Matt, who used to be an exterminator, explains that identifying the pest is crucial for any kind of remedy. There are 5 common mites, for example, and each have their own life cycle. This is important to know to treat your flock because you must break the life cycle. There are different types of lice, and then there's also mice, rats, and even snakes. The take away is that prevention is the key. Make sure your flock has access to dust baths because that's how they will keep most biting parasites at bay. Don't let mice, rats, or snakes a reason to come to your coop. Maintain a healthy flock by not overcrowding your coop, a good chicken to coop ratio is important for a less stressful environment. Plus we answer viewer questions.
