Nell Gwyn was an English actress, courtesan, and mistress of Charles II of England (aka: ther merry monarch). She was born in 1650 in London, and was one of the first actresses to appear on the English stage. She had a natural charm and beauty that made her popular with the crowds. Though her background was humble, she went on to become one of the most famous women of the day. Nell's rise to fame began in 1665. She became an overnight sensation on the stage and soon began appearing in many other plays. Her wit, charm, and beauty made her a favorite of the King, and she became his mistress in 1668. They had two sons, Charles and James. Nell Gwyn's life was full of adventure and scandal. She was a fiercely independent woman who fought for her rights and didn't let anyone take advantage of her. Her story has been told in a number of plays and films, and she remains an inspiration to many women today. --------------------------------------------------------- Queens podcast is part of Airwave Media podcast network. S2 Ep 11Anne Boleyn, Part 1

E

You’ve heard of “sister from another mister,” but what about a sisters with the same mister? We’re raising our Homewrecker cocktails high (1 part Strawberry Vodka, 1 part Peach Schnapps, and some orange juice) to Queen Anne Boleyn as we dissect how on Earth she was mislabeled as such, even though her sister Mary’s affairs with King Francis and others (she was King Henry VIII’s mistress for a bit too!) earned her title of “the most infamous whore.” Just so the portrait is complete, we begin during the early life of Queen Anne Boleyn and skim through her education, her family, and the rumors about her appearance. For over 6 years, King Henry VIII stalked her, incessantly writing love letters courting Anne to become his mistress. She refused until, finally, his long-drawn-out annulment with Queen Catherine of Aragon was resolved, and the opportunity presented itself for Anne’s marriage-or-nothing ultimatum to be satisfied. Gross things royals did to maintain power and bloodlines for 1000: King Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon, was the widow of Henry VIII's brother, Arthur. In this episode, you’ll also hear: Dispelling rumors of a sixth finger and witchcraft warts Henry VIII’s mistresses and the ladies in waiting Noble suitors and giving into King Henry’s stalker-like advances Must-listen moments: [00:06:28] Anne's early education was the time in history when girls actually got a fairly good education. It was just fashionable at this time to educate your daughters well…Mary and Anne Boleyn were educated at home by her mother at the beginning of her life. [00:36:39]: She may not have been this great beauty for the time. But one of her biographers wrote that she was a remarkable, intelligent, quick-witted, full young noblewoman. She first drew people into conversation with her and then amused and entertained them. In short, her energy and vitality made her the center of attention at any social gathering. [00:53:02] Henry had never flaunted a mistress like this before…he had had Bessie Blount before and then Mary Bolen, and they had kids together and stuff. He was always respectful to Catherine in this, but with Anne, it was different…he paraded her around. S2 Ep 4Elizabeth Bathory

E

It's our Halloween episode. Elizabeth Bathory: The Blood Countess! But was she? Nathan and Katy pair a vampire-inspired drink as we gab about this supposed infamous serial killers. Was Bathory really that bad? Short answer? Probably no, but maybe. You hear a lot about how this dangerous woman bathed in the blood of virgins (which... probably isn't actually even possible), but what you don't hear about is how a lot of really powerful men owed her money. Like. A lot of money. So, was she so evil that she needed to be locked away for the safety of all the young girls in the country? Or was it just super easy to lock up a rich woman and never have to pay her back? You let us know what you think. Queens podcast is part of Airwave Media podcast network. S2 Ep 3Marie Antoinette

E

Have you ever heard the phrase, "let them eat cake"? If so, you probably attribute the phrase to the last queen of France. The infamous Marie Antoinette. Let's get this out of the way right now. She didn't say that. The phrase actually originated from a German folk tale that predates her birth. Are we saying that she was the perfect queen though? No. Marie was not raised to rule. Brought at the Austrian court of her impressive mother, Maria Theresa, Marie should not have lacked for education. Yet, little Marie Antonia was not inclined to reading. Anyway, she was never meant to be queen of France. But, as fate would have it, the unprepared teenage Marie finds herself thrown into the French court and the political intrigue at Versaille. Marie's tale is truly heartbreaking and we wish we had better news. Either way, she's definitely made an impression since we're still talking about her to this day. She was born in 1463 in Forlì and was the daughter of Galeazzo Maria Sforza, the Duke of Milan, and Lucrezia Landriani. She was known for her intelligence, strength and courage, and was a powerful leader in her own right. At the age of sixteen, Caterina was married off to Girolamo Riario, the nephew of Pope Sixtus IV, and became the Lady of Imola and Forlì. S1 Ep 10Elizabeth Woodville

E

Sure, we are very accustomed to Queens named Elizabeth in England these days, but who was the original Elizabeth? Well, that would be Elizabeth Woodville, of course. Aka, Liza with a W! Elizabeth Woodville's marriage to the young and handsome king Edward IV was scandalous. Was it witchcraft? No. She was just super hot and lovely, so he wanted to marry her despite her being a widow and a commoner. (Even though her mother had literally been a duchess, but whatever) . In this episode we go over: The Wars of the Roses The Princes in the Tower Lots of family drama Witchcraft accusations The introduction of the Tudor dynasty All while drinking malmsey wine (which Liza may or may not have had her brother-in-law drowned in). S1 Ep 8Madame de Pompadour

E

Madame de Pompadour, long time mistress and fried of king Louis XV of France, once said "Champagne is the only wine that leaves a woman more beautiful after drinking it". So today, we're popping the bubbly and getting to know Jean Fish aka Madame de Pompadour. Born Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson to an upper middle class family, little Jeanny was remarkable from a young age. Of course it wasn't long until she caught the eye of the king. She was the official mistress of King Louis XV and a highly influential figure in the French court. She was a patron of the arts and sciences, a talented singer and musician, and a great conversationalist. We get it, Jean. You're perfect. Her influence extended beyond the court and she was a major patron of the arts and sciences, sponsoring many of the famous French Enlightenment philosophers and scientists. She was also a great lover of books and was a major collector of rare books and manuscripts. S1 Ep 6Catherine of Aragon part 1

E

Divorced, beheaded, died. Divorced, beheaded survived. The wives of Henry VIII, king of England are all famous, but sometimes his first queen, Catherine of Aragon can be overlooked. She was born in Spain in 1485 and was the daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, who had unified Spain. She was betrothed to Arthur, Prince of Wales, from a super young age. Sadly, things did not go as planned when Arthur Tudor died after just a few months of marriage. And now the Tudors (namely, Henry VII) just didn't know what to do with their little Spanish princess. Today we pair a pomegranate-based cocktail with a fascinating princess turned Queen, Catherine of Aragon. Also, Arthur Tudor. Did they or didn't they!? S1 Ep 5Boudica

E

On this episode, we drink ale & talk about the OTHER Queen-B. Boudica! The woman scorned who almost took down the Roman army. The truth is that we may never be 100% sure what part of Boudica's story is legend and which part is fact. But regardless, her story has been an inspiration for thousands ever since the interest in her grew during the Victorian period. Queen Boudica lived during the time when the Romans occupied the Brittania (aka, modern-day Brittian) and was leader of the Iceni tribe. When Nero's dudes decided they didn't like a woman being in charge of a major clan, they did some pretty messed up stuff to Bouidca and her daughters. She and her people decided they had enough of Rome and nearly drove them out of their lands. Some even believe that evidence of her scorched earth (literally) tactics remains today in parts of England today. (You can read more about that here). While largely forgotten to history, queen Victoria took a shine to her and she came to be the legend that we know of today. If you like this episode you might also like these other Boudica-centric episodes from Ancient history fangirls The Other half ---------------------------- Queens podcast is part of Airwave Media podcast network. S1 Ep 4Catherine de'Medici

E

Catherine de Medici was a powerful figure in 16th century Europe, as the Queen consort of France from 1547 to 1559, and then as the Queen Mother from 1559 until her death in 1589. Her origin story is actually super scary. Starting as a really rich orphan whose life was constantly threatened, she was saved by her friends in high places (ie: The Pope). Then, after becoming queen of France, she was a great patron of the arts and culture, and helped to shape the cultural landscape of France during her lifetime. She was also an absolute force to be reckoned with who took no shit. She played a major role in the affairs of France, from her husband's succession to the throne in 1547 to her son's accession in 1589. From her marriage to King Henry II to her death, Catherine de Medici was a crucial figure in the history of Renaissance Europe, and her influence is still felt today. S1 Ep 3Lucrezia Borgia

E

Lucrezia Borgia has been given a really unfair reputation in history. Poisoner, brother "lover", and all around scandalous. Sorry to tell you, most of these are likely very untrue. Born to an Italian cardinal, Rodrigo Borgia, her life began as a scandal. Famously, cardinals aren't supposed to have families. But this one sure did. Lucrezia was very much loved by her father who eventually went on to become Pope Alexander VI aka Pope Daddy. Her family was a scandal at every turn, but was Lucrezia an active participant in these scandals, an innocent bystander or a pawn in the games of the powerful men in her family? Due to the (most certainly false) story of Lucrezia being an infamous poisoner, we're pairing this episode with a cocktail simply called Poison, which is made with vodka, orange liqueur, lemon, and soda water. So, drink up queens. Queens podcast is part of Airwave Media podcast network. Please contact [email protected] if you would like to advertise on our podcast. Want more Queens? S1 Ep 2Cleopatra

E

It's the second episode of Queens Podcast, y'all! And today we're pairing a classic glass of red wine with the one and only Cleopatra! Cleopatra is one of the most iconic figures in history. She was the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, ruling around 51 to 30 B.C.E. During her reign, she worked to bring Egypt back to its former glory and restore its economy. She was also the lover of Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. And while her love affairs seem to be what people want to talk about, she was so much more than her relationships. Cleopatra was known for her intelligence, cunning, and ambition. She was able to speak multiple languages and was well-educated. She was also a great negotiator, successfully negotiating favorable terms for Egypt with the major force of the time, Rome. The legacy of Cleopatra is one of intelligence, bravery, and power. Although she died at the age of 39, she left a lasting impression on history. Her story has been told in books, films, and plays, and her name is still widely known today.
