Some binmen are being told to take an £8k pay cut after national austerity and local mismanagement combined to bankrupt the city. Rats are proliferating along with the rubbish heaps on Birmingham’s streets, as binmen refuse to accept the demand of the bankrupt council’s financial commissioners that refuse workers should take huge pay cuts in order to help fix finances they had nothing to do with breaking. Indeed, the roots of this crisis in local authority funding go all the way back to the bank bailouts of 2008 – a fact about which media and politicians alike are keeping very quiet.
