Show Notes
There is a lot of fear surrounding the spine and weight training. When it comes to scoliosis and resistance training with barbells, there is even more fear and warnings from doctors, personal trainers and family members that lifting heavy with barbells will worsen the scoliotic curve.
We brought in scoliosis and spine expert, Dr. Beth Terranova, physical therapist, scoliosis specialist, barbell strength coach, and a graduate of our courses here at PRS to discuss the benefits of barbell training for people with scoliosis.
In this episode Dr. Beth discusses all about scoliosis, strength training, and getting under the barbell.
Dr. Beth shares:
- How weightlifting and progressive overload helped her keep her curve from progressing or being painful
- The Scoliosis spectrum and the difference between structural versus functional
- How, when, and why you should integrate barbell training into rehab and strength training for people with scoliosis
- Why our discs aren't jelly donuts and why it's important to load them even with scoliosis and other spinal deformities
- If people with with asymmetries and muscular imbalances should get under a barbell or wait to "correct" them
