Expectations have been falling for quite some time. Standards on what it means to live a great life have also fallen.
The best way to have an apathetic, uninspired population is to set the expectations of our lives so low that we never have to worry about being disappointed about missing our mark.
Do you want to have a great marriage? Raise your relationship expectation. Do you want to have more money? Raise your financial standards. The list goes on and on. If you are tired of living a mediocre life, make sure that the expectations that you have for yourself aren't mediocre.
