Ep 17: On Ancestral Healing
This week's topic on Ancestral Healing is not one that I've ever spoken to. And perhaps it was my ancestors themselves who inspired me to share this perspective with you. As I am coming off of the heels on an Energy Healing training based in the ancient African wisdom, ancestral healing is ripe in my being. The topic of connecting with ancestors might be a strange one for you. It certainly has been for me up until just a few months ago. And we often look at the traumas or imbalances we hold in our body as an "ancestral curse." This episode invites you to create space for this new perspective: looking at the "curse" as the gift. In this episode, I share the personal experience of trauma that has existed across generations in my family, my work / responsibility / privilege in clearing them, and experiences I've had being visited by my ancestors. I hope this brings you clarity or curiosity. I hope it starts to fill pieces of the puzzle that have been missing for you. And I hope it brings you the reminder that you are not alone—now, nor have you ever been. You are the embodiment of your ancestors' wildest dreams! Sending you so much love, my fellow Birth Warriors. >> Learn more about Joy DeGruy (https://www.joydegruy.com/) and her work on Post-traumatic Slave Syndrome >> Learn more about Malidoma Some´ (https://malidoma.com/main/) and his work on connecting with the Ancestors. Ep 16: My Favorite Moments of 2020
We made it, Birth Warriors! We survived, and in some cases, even thrived in 2020. Here we are stepping into 2021—perhaps with uncertainty or hesitation—but doing it just the same! In our very first episode for the New Year, I reflect on the moments in 2020 that brought me the greatest levels of joy, growth, and appreciation. And I end this episode with sharing the thought I am using as my guiding principle for the New Year. If it resonates with you, I encourage you to explore using it as well. Here we go, Birth Warriors. Ep 15: A Conversation with My Soul Sista & Endo Warrior, Sophia
I've known Sophia for years. She's one of the dear friends who've been with me in the midst of my losses. In addition to being my Soul Sista, she's also an Endo Warrior. Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus grows outside the uterus. It often leads to debilitating pain and it isn't uncommon for it to go undiagnosed for years—which was also Sophia's experience. I consider Sophia to be in the Birth Warrior family because endometriosis has been known to make fertility more challenging. To be an Endo Warrior is to dare to not simply live, but to live well even with the condition. In this episode Sophia shares her earliest experience with the condition at 12 years old, surgeries and treatments over the years, and the approach she's now taken for reclaiming her sovereignty over her life and body. If you're also an Endo Warrior, I'm sending you so, so much love. Know that you are not alone! And if someone you love has been diagnosed with endometriosis, hopefully today's episode provided a look into what this experience is like and how to support your Endo Warrior on their journey. If you're looking to get to the next phase of your Birth Warrior Journey, here are ways that I can support you: 1. Ep 14: Ancient Wounds of Loss & Infertility
Challenges around fertility and pregnancy activate an ancient wound within us—the fear of being ostracized from our tribe (whether the one we were born into or the one we chose through our partner), the fear of our partner replacing us with another, "more fertile" mate, and the fear of losing opportunities for recognition and upward mobility. This ancient wound runs so deep that it operates on the subconscious level without our awareness. And yet, it's one of the sources of panic and emotional distress around pregnancy. Because it causes emotional distress without our conscious awareness, it means that this ancient programming actually inhibits the body's ability to be in an optimal state for conception and pregnancy. In today's episode, I share more on where this ancient wound comes from, how it continues to play out in modern society, and how you can actually TRANSFORM THIS INTO A GIFT to regain our sense of sovereignty on the conception and pregnancy journey. As a heads up, this conversation is gonna be one of the heart-to-heart ones. I go a bit deep because I want you to be able to move through this journey from a place of power instead of from a place of fear. And what's more empowering than having an awareness of the hidden influences on your journey? If you find today's episode helpful, please share it with another Birth Warrior on their journey. It just might be the words they needed to hear today. The Birth Warrior Bootcamp kicks off this Weds, Dec 2, 2020! Wooh! This is a week-long educational series that will get you from a state of regret around your pregnancy journey to feeling confident, clear, and ready! Ep 13: Pregnancy & Loss in a Foreign Country
Pregnancy Loss on its own is difficult. Imagine when that loss happens in a country you've lived in for just a few weeks. And imagine spending all of that time under lockdown during the early, frantic stages of the COVID pandemic. Imagine seeking prenatal care and being told by one medical facility after the other that they not taking in new patients. This is the story of Donette and her husband, Andre, who experienced both the joy of their first pregnancy and the painful experience that came too soon after. Hear how they've navigated this unknown territory and what healing has looked like for them since. And because their baby was here (and still is, though in another form). Because he was (and still is loved), let's acknowledge him by saying his name: Alexandre. Thank you for sharing your journey with us, Donette. This experience can be shattering, but I believe each time a Birth Warrior shares their story, they grant others a little more power to keep going. Ep 12: Using Music & Voice for Your Healing
A few weeks ago during one of our Birth Warrior Wednesday sessions, I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Shoshana Vogel, whose many gifts to the world include being a musician and vocal instructor. Shoshana also uses music, sound, and play in her work to support the brain development of babies. Because I intentionally used music and voice as part of my baby's therapy when he was in the NICU, I was eager to learn from Shoshana, ways that Birth Warriors could employ music on their own healing journey. And trust me, there was so much wisdom that poured out of our conversation: intuitive wisdom, wisdom from our own experiences using music and voice to heal, and from the experiences of clients. As Shoshana shared, when we bypass the emotions we're experiencing, they come back up in the body. Music gives us the ability to create space for the emotions and create a path for their healing. "That allowance of the feeling is part of the path to repair." More About Shoshana Shoshana Vogel grew up on Staten Island, where her musicianship and movement background were fostered. She studied ethnomusicology at UC Berkeley, where she learned Ghanaian drumming, sang in the gospel choir and furthered classical guitar studies. In her graduate work at UCLA, she studied yoga, movement, and ethnomusicology, while helping students to develop their critical thinking skills in performance and critique. Specific work with babies, children and brain development followed, focusing on child directed play. Shoshana is a classically trained vocal instructor and guitarist. She spent three years as the K-6 music teacher at Our Community School charter, as well as the 2014-2015 school year as music and movement instructor for Kindergarten classes at Staten Island Community Charter School. She was the 2016-2017 music teacher for early childhood education at Creative Steps at the University Settlement Society and is on the faculty at the Bloomingdale School of Music, teaching early childhood music. In addition, since late 2015, she has been working as a teaching artist at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Shoshana is Music Together and Orff Level I certified and continues to teach children and their parents in music and movement curriculum. She is proud to have created a summer 2017 pilot program between the Bloomingdale School of Music and the Bloomingdale Family Head-Start Program that continues to thrive. Ep 11: Restoring Trust in the Body - Part 1
Today's podcast episode is all about restoring trust in your body. Wherever you are on the Birth Warrior journey, you may have experienced losing trust in your body, becoming disappointed, or even hating your body when it fails to do what you want it to do. I want to offer a gentle reminder that experiencing a loss or infertility may be our body sending us a message that we need to heal something. It may be trauma, stress, or any painful experience that we had in the past. Our body can be considered as our vehicle and compass as we are moving around in this world. That's why it is very important that we learn how to listen to it, tune in to it, and trust it. Diving deeper into Part 2 of this episode, I've included a few exercises that can help Birth Warriors, into bringing back love and trust in your bodies. → This episode will help you to better understand what happens in the body after loss, infertility, or trauma, and how to restore the trust in our bodies that's needed to navigate the world with confidence. I also walk you through a simple exercise to learn to reconnect with the body. --------- UPDATE: The Birth Warrior Bootcamp has been moved to Dec 2 through Dec 9, 2020. Ep 10: Honoring Ellisander's Life by Sending Gifts of Comfort to Other Grieving Families
Today's episode is an interview with Elizabeth Ortiz, the founder and CEO of EllisBearyLoved, a nonprofit that distributes comfort boxes to families grieving the loss of an infant. Elizabeth created EllisBearyLoved in 2018 after the loss of her son Ellisander Lorenzo Valerio, who passed away due to omphalocele, eight days after his birth. Elizabeth and I met a year ago at the annual Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Walk in Brooklyn. I love the way she fearlessly talks about her son and ensures that his time here isn't forgotten. During our conversation, Elizabeth shares her experience giving birth to Ellisander and having to prepare for the worst, a subsequent high risk pregnancy, leaning on family, friends, and faith as part of her healing, and the work she's been doing to support other families after their loss. If you're inspired by Elizabeth's story and would like to stay in touch, here's how to do so: Via Instagram: @ellisbearyloved; Via Facebook: Facebook.com/Ellisbearyloved; and Via Email: [email protected] And donate to EllisBearyLoved (https://gf.me/u/y3fkks) so Elizabeth can continue her work supporting families as they grieve the loss of an infant. ---- And to stay in touch with me, join the private Birth Warrior community on Facebook. Ep 9: How to Know When It's Time to Try Again
I hear this question so often from Birth Warriors: "How do I know when it's time to try again?" I decided to make it one of the recent topics for our Facebook Live within the private Birth Warrior community. This is a recording of that live session. Listen to this episode to learn what the markers are for getting to a place of "yes" in terms of trying again. And whether or not you've checked the boxes for those markers, as long as you're focusing on conception, it's important to know what other factors you should consider to reduce your risk for pregnancy complications. I share my own rainbow pregnancy experience and the anxiety I felt after actually confirming my pregnancy. There are a host of negative outcomes that could occur during pregnancy while holding stress, anxiety, fear, and trauma in the body. I want to ensure that you're not only aware of these, but that you also have a game plan that will support you in thriving in your next pregnancy! ------ Let's stay in touch, Birth Warrior! Ep 8: The NICU Survival Guide
September is NICU Awareness Month, a time when we honor NICU babies, their families, and the health professionals that support them. If you're a Birth Warrior, I also want to acknowledge that the NICU may hold memories of painful experiences for you. It's certainly where I experienced most of the trauma after my second pregnancy with my preemie (I share a bit of my personal story in this episode as well). You'll find today's topic especially useful if: You're a Birth Warrior who may be having a high risk pregnancy, and as a result, your baby may possibly spend some time in the NICU after its birth You already experienced being in the NICU with your angel baby and DREAD having to go through that experience again in your next pregnancy Your baby is currently in the NICU, everything is scary and overwhelming and you're not sure how you can best support your baby and stay sane through it all! Knowing how to navigate uncertainty gives us the confidence to show up with strength and grace. And being prepared for undesirable outcomes (such as having to be in the NICU) also removes the fear of not knowing what to do if it becomes your reality. In this episode, I share strategies for getting the support that you need, for contributing to your baby's wellness, and staying sane through it all. Please share this episode with a Birth Warrior in the NICU or who have fears around surviving the NICU in the future. --- If you're looking to get to the next phase of your Birth Warrior Journey, here are ways that I can support you: 1. Ep 7Ep 7: Katie's Birth Warrior Journey: From Infertility to Motherhood
We are all inspired by happy endings. After my pregnancy loss I would listen to the stories of women/birthing people with successful subsequent pregnancies as a reminder that this was possible for me too. In this episode, we hear the story of one of the Birth Warriors I've had the pleasure of working with. Katie went through two years of trying to conceive, two years of fertility treatments, two failed IUIs, and of course, a lot of frustration in between. She is now the proud Mama to a beautiful baby boy. What I love about Katie's story is not just that she had a successful pregnancy, which is such a gift in and of itself, but also that in the process of preparing her body for her next pregnancy, she reconnected with herself and nature and the Earth on a deep and spiritual level. This new relationship and sense of wholeness is something that she will bring with her as she parents her child and moves in the world. Ep 6: Healing Shame & Guilt on The Birth Warrior Journey
Shame and guilt are two of the most difficult emotions to overcome after a loss or infertility diagnosis. They hit at such a tender, tender place. And because whatever we feel guilt or shame around, we tend to feel safer keeping it a secret, these difficult emotions fester under the surface. But staying in shame and guilt can have a negative impact on our emotional balance, which can then negatively impact the conception and pregnancy journey. As a continuation from Ep 5 where I introduce the scale (or ladder) that our emotions exist on, I dig deeper into guilt and shame here, and how to finally start releasing them. We do so by changing the way we look at them and how we look at ourselves. If you're intrigued by what you hear in today's episode, let's continue the conversation in my private Birth Warrior Community on Facebook / https://tinyurl.com/yb9c6xus. I host a Weekly Live every Weds at 12PM ET where I share resources that I don't share anywhere else and answer your questions in real time! Ep 5: Do Your Emotions Scare You? Here's Why They Don't Have To
Jealousy, Sadness, Shame, Anger, Fear, Blame...these are some of the emotions we experience after a loss or infertility diagnosis. They are a natural and often necessary part of our healing journey, and yet we stifle them when they show up because they seem so ugly and icky. What if I told you that it's in creating space for them that you're able to heal and release them? In this episode, I share a framework called The Scale of Emotions by spiritual teachers, Abraham Hicks, and how to use it in your healing and pregnancy after loss or infertility. You'll learn that: 1. Whatever emotions you're experiencing are good, right, and valid 2. You have access to better, more uplifting emotions by applying the simple techniques I share in this episode Grab the Scale of Emotions here (https://tinyurl.com/ep5-scale)! ---- Ways That I Can Support You on Your Birthing / Rebirth Journey: Book a complimentary Clarity Call here: nataleefacey.com/contact / calendly.com/nataleefacey/20min Send me any questions or reflections you have: [email protected] Join my mailing list to receive "Love Notes" and updates on events and workshops And let's connect on IG if we haven't already!: @thebirthwarriors Update on The Birth Warrior Community: The Birth Warrior Community is no longer on Facebook. Ep 4: How to Use Triggers to Accelerate Your Healing
Triggers are probably one of the most annoying things you go through after loss or infertility diagnosis. They often sneak up on you and take over your emotions, reminding you of past painful experiences. In this episode, I share some of my techniques for actually using triggers to accelerate your healing. They can become beautiful gifts once you understand how to work with them. Ep 3Ep 3: Your Invisible Wounds & How They're Impacting Your Life
After the painful and traumatic experience of a loss or infertility, there are invisible wounds that are often left unattended to. This isn't usually done intentionally, but we don't always have the space, support, or tools to process and heal our painful experiences. But unless that healing work is done, the imbalance those invisible wounds create will show up in our relationships, our career, in future pregnancies, and how we parent. This episode will help you to identify the impact your invisible wounds might be having on your life and why it's critical to heal them. ----- Ways That I Can Support You on Your Birthing / Rebirth Journey: Book a complimentary Clarity Call here: nataleefacey.com/contact / calendly.com/nataleefacey/20min Send me any questions or reflections you have: [email protected] Join my mailing list to receive "Love Notes" and updates on events and workshops And let's connect on IG if we haven't already!: @thebirthwarriors Update on The Birth Warrior Community: The Birth Warrior Community is no longer on Facebook. Ep 2: The Story of My First Pregnancy Loss
This is the first time that I publicly share the experience of losing my first pregnancy. I recorded this episode with my dear friend, Sophia (pre-quarantine in NYC), which is symbolic on many levels. For one, she was there with me in the hospital as I was losing my little one and she recounted an incredibly powerful moment that I had forgotten about. And second, the recounting of this experience brought sadness and tears, but also laughter, gratitude, and a whole lot of love. This episode emphasizes the importance of having a tribe—people who can be with you in your most vulnerable moments, and hold space for all the emotions that come up. It also sets the stage for the transformation I've experienced after losing my first pregnancy (Bella) and then my little preemie (Mateo). I'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode.
