Heather Knight is currently serving as the founder and chair of Surviving to Thriving, an Atlanta based non-profit that provides a long-term sustainability program for victims of domestic violence. The passion for domestic violence awareness and prevention started from a personal situation in her teen years and then grew into a career in law enforcement. She recently left the police department after founding Surviving to Thriving in order to dedicate more time to her podcast of the same name and to teach the headlining program of R.A.D. Women’s Self-Defense. Zack Knight is currently an Infantry Lieutenant and platoon leader in the United States Army Georgia National Guard. His time spent in the Army has involved extensive training in risk assessment and mitigation techniques that have been proven in the most intense environments. Prior to joining the Army, Zack spent seven years serving as a police officer in the Smyrna community where he grew up. These years were spent receiving the best crime detection and prevention training law enforcement has to offer. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Penn Foster University and is currently enrolled at American Military University, where he is completing a master’s program in business administration (MBA) with a concentration in security management. He is also a Physical Security Professional (PSP®), a credential that indicates he is an industry leader in physical security with a specialization in threat analysis. Amber Johnson shares her harrowing experiences within the New Beginnings Girls Academy that once called Pace, Florida it's home. After attempting suicide, she was sent to the school, locked away in isolation, taken off her anti-depressants and given no permission to speak. “This man was my boss, my pastor, my father-in-law, and the man of God in my life. When he started sexually touching and abusing me, it almost broke me. I was programmed to please him in all that I did but I knew this was not supposed to happen but fell into a sense of shock and repressed the memories as he would use my body for his deviant pleasures and sexual release. Grooming a victim for rape is about control, and he knew he had it. He began a years-long sexual abuse of me that further isolated and silenced me. In fact, after the initial abuse incident, I was so traumatized that I completely lost my singing voice. My two-plus octave range was reduced to a scratchy three notes. My heart was broken. I saw how expertly he manipulated and raped me. I would only have to imagine that several other victims exist because he clearly knew what he was doing, and he was bold enough to sexually violate his own daughter-in-law. This man knew how to get what he wanted and what he did to me hurt more deeply than I will ever be able to fully express. Karen Kroft was in the Independent Fundamental Baptist Movement for 43 years. She talks about being raised with immense fear of government and then, moving from one fearful situation to another when her dad moved them from Nebraska to Oklahoma City, where he served on staff at http://www.windsorhills.org/ (Windsor Hills Baptist Church) – a church she described as “more Hyles than Hyles.” The pastor was domineering, cover ups were commonplace, and the congregation was scared. To give a sense of what type of place Windsor Hills Baptist Church is – consider this, https://kfor.com/news/okla-church-makes-natl-hate-group-list/ (The SPLC added them to their list of 20 hate groups operating within Oklahoma in 2013). She shares what led to her eventual exit from the movement and – after 43 years experience – whether she thinks there is potential for reform of the IFB. ​Tiffani Cappello spent many years struggling with depression and an anxiety disorder that was dominating her life and damaging her health. She suffered many traumatic experiences throughout her life, including the death of her own child and 5 years of debilitating chronic illness. As a result, she felt defeated by life and wound up believing many things about herself and the world that were disempowering. The beliefs she developed in the past were now haunting her future and preventing her from living a happy and healthy life. ​ Believing she was unlovable and inherently defective took her life in all sorts of painful directions. She got married and subsequently divorced. She spent 15 years in an extreme Independent Fundamental Baptist church that taught her she was born a defective sinner and, as a woman, was inferior and subservient to men. After her divorce she dated men that were addicts and abusers. ​​ After leaving the religious cult, she realized just how impactful our beliefs can be. Tiffani began to not only question the oppressive religious dogma she had once embraced, but also began to take a good hard look at all of her beliefs. She began a journey of personal development that started with reading self-help books and ended with Rapid Transformational Therapy. RTT has changed her life and now, as an RTT hypnotherapist and mindset coach, she is able to transform the lives of other people the way her life has been changed. His father, Ron Williams, was the founder and director of Hephzibah House in Winona Lake In, which also has Believers Baptist Church – independent church that was started by my father on his own. His father and mother have years of documented abuse that has occurred under them to students in the home, staff children and even church kids – emotional abuse, spiritual abuse, mental abuse, and even physical abuse. His mother passed away, but her legacy of destruction and hurt lingers on in hundreds of lives that she damaged. If you have left the IFB "Movement" (whatever that is) why are you singling out the IFB denomination and not addressing abuse within religious institutions as a whole? Who are some of the most egregious IFB villains? How many are seeing the issues within the IFB span all denominations? All have the same hierarchical, institutional, man-made structure. Steven Thiel was recruited into an IFB youth group when he was almost 15, and was groomed to be a “preacher boy," preaching every chance he got in homeless shelters, detention centers and services. He surrendered to the “call” on his life and committed to full-time ministry. He attended West Coast Baptist College and then served 8.5 years in two different IFB churches.
