Show Notes

In 2018, Botham Jean, a defenseless accountant, was fatally shot in his own home by Amber Guyger, a Dallas police officer who claimed she mistook his apartment for her own. The subsequent legal proceedings resulted in Guyger's murder conviction and a ten-year prison sentence, a ruling that survived multiple appeals. Beyond the criminal trial, a civil jury later held the former officer liable for a wrongful death claim, awarding Jean’s family nearly $100 million in damages. The case sparked significant public outcry and led to the passage of the Botham Jean Act, which mandates that Texas law enforcement keep body cameras active during investigations. Additionally, the city of Dallas honored the victim's memory by renaming a major street Botham Jean Boulevard. These sources collectively document the intersection of police accountability, racial justice, and the enduring legal legacy of the tragedy.
