Show Notes

On July 11, 2011, a massive blast at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base changed Cyprus forever. In this episode of pplpod, we uncover the chain of negligence behind the Mari explosion, where 98 containers of confiscated munitions self-detonated, killing 13 people—including the Commander of the Navy—and injuring dozens.

We examine how the destruction of the nearby Vasilikos Power Station wiped out half the island's electricity supply, leading to rolling blackouts and billions in economic damages. Finally, we discuss the explosive political aftermath, including the public protests and the independent inquiry that placed blame on President Dimitris Christofias for this historic military accident.
