Show Notes

On this episode of pplpod, we unravel the tragic web of deception behind the 2004 death of Lori Hacking, a pregnant 27-year-old stock broker's assistant from Salt Lake City. While her husband, Mark Hacking, initially reported that she vanished during a morning jog, investigators soon discovered a life built on fabrication: Mark had lied to everyone about graduating from the University of Utah and being accepted to medical school in North Carolina.

We discuss the fatal night Lori discovered her husband's academic fraud and planned to leave him, leading Mark to shoot her while she slept and dispose of her body in a dumpster. The episode details the subsequent search of the Salt Lake County landfill where her remains were eventually recovered, as well as the public outcry surrounding Mark’s sentence; due to Utah's indeterminate sentencing laws at the time, his minimum prison term was only six years. Finally, we examine the lasting legacy of the case, from the passage of "Lori’s Law" which increased minimum sentences for murder, to the emotional decision by Lori’s parents to remove "Hacking" from her headstone, replacing it with the Portuguese word filhinha, meaning "little daughter".
