Ryūnosuke Akutagawa: Father of the Japanese Short Story

Ryūnosuke Akutagawa was a prominent Japanese author of the Taishō period who earned the title of "father of the Japanese short story" for his prolific and influential work. Educated in English literature, he specialized in reimagining classical legends and historical events through a modernist lens, as seen in famous tales like "Rashōmon" and "In a Grove." Throughout his career, his writing evolved from historical reinterpretations to autobiographical stories and satirical pieces, often reflecting his declining mental and physical health. His life was tragically cut short at age 35 by a voluntary overdose, an event he attributed to a sense of "vague insecurity" regarding his future.
