Show Notes

This biography covers the life of Ram Dass, an influential American spiritual teacher originally known as Richard Alpert. Before his transformation, he was a Harvard psychologist who gained notoriety for his controversial psychedelic research alongside Timothy Leary. After being dismissed from his academic post, his 1967 journey to India led him to his guru, Neem Karoli Baba, who provided him with a new name and spiritual focus. He subsequently authored the landmark book Be Here Now, which played a pivotal role in introducing Eastern philosophy and yoga to Western mainstream culture. Throughout his later years, he established numerous charitable foundations and dedicated himself to teaching conscious aging and service to others. Even after suffering a debilitating stroke, he continued to advocate for mindfulness and spiritual awareness until his death in 2019.
