In this episode, we explore the life and legacy of Anselm of Canterbury (1033–1109), a Benedictine monk, philosopher, and the "Father of Scholasticism". We trace his journey from his early years at the Abbey of Bec, which he transformed into a premier seat of learning in Europe, to his elevation as the reluctant Archbishop of Canterbury in 1093.
Join us as we examine Anselm’s pivotal role in the Investiture Controversy, where his principled defense of the Church’s spiritual independence led to fierce conflicts with English kings William II (Rufus) and Henry I, resulting in two separate exiles from England.
