#133 – MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL, WE BOUGHT A ZOO and more!

E

Since the inception of DVDs more than a dozen years ago, home video Special Features - those wonderful and sometimes not so wonderful “extras” which seemingly validate purchasing the movie after you’ve seen it at the theater three months prior - have greatly improved in style and content. Case in point: The special features on Paramount’s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol Blu-ray are state of the art. Tops in not only in style, but in menu presentation. The team that put together the disc clearly had it’s menus in mind while Ghost Protocol was being filmed. In Extra Features 19, John and I get to talking about the Ghost Protocol disc, as well as the impressive We Bought a Zoo Blu-ray, which has a couple neat special features from Cameron Crowe and Co. We also discuss the new titles: Kate & Leopold: The Special Edition (which is a fine film and a guilty pleasure, and I’ll stand by that claim), The Witches of Oz, Conversation Piece (starring Burt Lancaster), The Siege of Firebase Gloria (from 20th Century Fox’s video on demand), the French film The Conquest, Timur Bekmambetov’s The Darkest Hour; and The Marvel 3-Movie Collection (Thor, Hulk and Dr Strange) and The Marvel Movie Collection: Ultimate Avengers - both from Lionsate Home Video.

#96 - PULP FICTION, JACKIE BROWN, MANHUNTER and more!

E

New on video store shelves and up for extensive discussion in this episode is... Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (1994) and Jackie Brown (1997) on Blu-ray - Both films making their debut on blu-ray, with Pulp Fiction getting a little extra love in the form of newly produced special features: New Interviews with the Cast and a Critic's Retrospective on the Movie's Place in Film History with Elvis Mitchel and Scott Foundas. The Honeymooners: Lost Episodes 1951-1957 - The Complete Restored Series on DVD - A 15-disc set running more than 3,000 minutes. It's everything a Honeymooner's fan could want. Really. There's 30 sketches in the set that have never been on DVD, 18 of which haven't been seen since they originally aired in the 1950s. It's $139.00, but all sorts of goodness. Poltergeist II (1986) on Blu-ray - John recalls the horrors of that "attack of the braces" scene. "A dental nightmare." Hero's Island (1961) on DVD - From the MGM Limited Edition Collection, starring James Mason and a young Harry Dean Stanton. Irvin Kirshner's Robocop 2 (1990) on Blu-ray - Featuring all those pre-CGI go-motion effects by the wizardly Phil Tippet. Manhunter (1986) on Blu-ray - Starring a young Stephen Lang (Avatar and Terra Nova) and featuring another psycho bad guy performance by Tom Noonan (Robocop 2) Vidal Sassoon: The Movie (2011) on DVD and Blu-ray - Who would have thought we'd enjoy this film? You've got to love the way Mr. Sassoon did Mia Farrow's hair for Rosemary's Baby, and this doc shows you how that transpired. Ken Burn's and Lynn Novick's Prohibition on DVD and Blu-ray - I'm 4-hours into this 6-hour doc (a 3-disc blu-ray set). Where did the time go? Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill (1980) on Blu-ray - a film that must be seen again to be appreciated. This new Blu-ray offers some nice special features, including The Making of Dressed to Kill and An Appreciation by Keith Gordon Featurette, which is rather insightful. Click on the playback links and enjoy that show!
