“And I kept coming to fellowships and people said, ‘Oh, I got a new car. Oh, the promises are coming true.’ I don’t know what promises they were talking about but it wasn’t AA’s promises. AA’s promises said I was going to lose my fear of economic insecurity. I was going to lose my fears of today, tomorrow, the year after. I was going to lose all these things that kept me in bondage. That’s what it said. It didn’t say I wasn’t going to live in poverty for 15 years. Guess what I outgrew in those 15 years? My fear of economic insecurity. It’s the truth. So don’t sugarcoat it because you don’t know.”
