In this session, Joe discusses the powerful imagery used to describe the depth of addiction. “Not only is he wrecking his friend if his sobriety is real, he’s probably killing him. And he’s so messed up that he thinks this is an oasis. What is an oasis typically? It may be water in a very arid place. But if I’m near death, it could very well be them. And the mirage is so potent that I’ll drink the sand.”
Joe emphasizes the importance of understanding the nature and depth of addiction. “Does anyone feel what he’s putting down? He’s putting down a very powerful image if you internalize what he’s talking about. And then he said drinkers are like that. So we’re trying to understand the nature and the depth of that illness, aren’t we?”
