Joe poignantly recounts, “How many of you can feel the power and the desperation in this testimony? That time in your mind emotionally when you thought you were having fun and pretty soon you knew it was work. And not only was it work, it was going to be a lot of work and I got to do it anyway.” Reflecting on a fellow’s testimony, he shares, “He describes it for him: gin, 2 bottles a day and often 3 got to be routine. This went on endlessly, and I began to awaken very early in the morning, shaking violently. Then started hanging out more and more frequently in those places and got on the hook borrowing money if they’d let you.”
Joe encourages listeners to reflect on their own experiences, asking, “How many of you started doing things to get something you wanted that you really never thought you’d find yourself doing?” This raw and honest discussion highlights the brutal cycle of addiction and the steps towards acknowledging powerlessness over substances.
