“I can talk to them about hopelessness because I know of hopelessness. And I can talk to you about a solution because I’m inhabited by one. In fact, the solution that inhabits me has directed me to you. And my job, if you’ll have it, is to wake up to that fact. Yes. So you will soon have your friend admitting he has many if not all the traits of an alcoholic. So it’s not always an all-spiritual conversation, is it? Because we meet them and they’re pretty tore up. And we talk about all kinds of worldly discomfort.”
Joe emphasizes the importance of connecting on a human level while gently guiding someone toward the spiritual solution that will lead them to recovery. This approach aligns with the principles of Step 12 AA, focusing on carrying the message to those who still suffer.
