In this Step 3 AA session, Joe reflects on the transformative moment when the obsession to use suddenly leaves and how, without knowing it, we become empowered by something greater than ourselves. Many people in recovery have experienced this sudden shift, where one day they simply stop using, seemingly without effort, and are invited to “walk it out” in sobriety.
Joe explains that this empowerment doesn’t come from our own willpower, but from the grace of a higher power. As the Big Book states, “we had to have God’s help”—our self-centeredness and addictive behaviors can’t be reduced by mere wishing or trying. True transformation requires us to turn our lives over to the care of God, as outlined in Step 3. This surrender allows us to experience freedom from the constant obsession and empowers us to live a new way of life.
