Reflecting on the challenges many face, Joe discusses overcoming prejudice and misconceptions about God and spirituality, particularly those stemming from childhood or violent anti-religious sentiments.
“Some of us have been violently anti-religious. To others, the word God brought up a particular idea of him, which someone had tried to impress upon them during childhood. Perhaps we rejected this particular conception because it seemed inadequate. With that rejection, we imagined we had abandoned the God idea entirely. We were bothered with the thought that faith and dependence upon a power beyond ourselves was somewhat weak, even cowardly. Any of you been there? Get just real uncomfortable with that conversation. I’m waiting on timing, and you’re kind of the make-it-happen type of person. Yeah.”
Joe’s discussion sheds light on these universal challenges while offering a message of hope and the possibility of transformation through the 12-step recovery process. This session emphasizes the importance of reaching out for help and the power of the support found within recovery communities.
