Join Joe McDonald as he reads from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, diving into the raw and emotional experiences outlined in the early pages of the book. Reflecting on the harrowing struggles faced by those battling addiction, Joe highlights the moments of profound despair and the pivotal thoughts that can lead to a renewed commitment to sobriety.
In this session, Joe discusses the degrading behaviors that addiction drives people to and the false sense of control that addicts often feel. “How many of you need to get well enough so you can just throw up back in the cup so you can drink it again? I’m telling you the real deal. And I thought that was normal. Nevertheless, hey dude, I was controlling the situation. Are you with me? And I don’t care what chemically you changed; we all did degrading things.”
Joe also touches on the hope that periods of sobriety can bring to loved ones, emphasizing the importance of understanding and support from family and friends. “And there were periods of sobriety which renewed my wife’s hope. How many of you had some people watching you? Look, he’s doing so good. You got this. And you’re thinking, well, I hope so.”
Joe’s discussion sheds light on the relentless inner turmoil faced by those in the grips of addiction while offering a message of hope and the possibility of transformation through the 12-step recovery process. This session emphasizes the importance of reaching out for help and the power of the support found within recovery communities.
