“We sometimes are more comfortable talking about ourselves in disparaging terms because somehow we feel it’s more humble. It’s not because the person hearing us can only hear us describing them. So when I say things like I was a piece of crap and I was this and I was that, they’re sitting there thinking, you mean like me? So I need people to know their identity when they approach—who you are and whose you are—so that when you start talking to them about how bad they feel about where they found themselves, they understand that at their best and at their worst, they’re a child of the living God. And the fact is demonstrated by right where they are, in the pit of their disorder.”
