“The healing comes from using it for a higher purpose. So it’s important for him to realize that your attempt to pass this on to him plays a vital role in your own recovery. What do they mean by vital? Yeah, it sounds pretty important, doesn’t it? When they talk about a vital organ, it’s not like, ‘Yeah, it’s not for me.’ If you want to live, then you’re going to have to act like you’re living. You have to speak life into everyone you encounter. That’s the condition. So actually, he may be helping you more than you’re helping him. How many of you have learned that? Make it plain he’s under no obligation to you, that you hope only that he’ll try and help other alcoholics when he escapes his own difficulties.”
Joe explores the importance of service, explaining that the act of helping others not only strengthens one’s recovery but is essential for spiritual growth. The journey of Step 12 is about giving back, and through this, we receive even greater healing.
