“With all the earnestness at our command, we beg of you to be fearless and thorough from the very start. The reason I couldn’t be honest is because I was afraid to be honest. And I’m not talking about stealing from you; of course, I stole from you—I had to feed a habit that was bigger than my ability to control it. But I wasn’t able to be honest with myself about how defeating my continued behavior was and how my plan was going to work out that this was all going to dovetail into victory someday.”
