“A lot of people skip over Step 4, but I would recommend finding someone who wants to do a deep dive with you. Fear, long after the addiction is gone, is going to drive you to stuff you’ll have to make amends for. It will make you uncomfortable in your skin and compel you to make up stories about yourself just to gain approval. None of you have done that? Told somebody you were perfect for them, did a little recon, and told them what they wanted to hear, only for them to find out it wasn’t real? No one’s ever told them how skilled you were and then found out they really wanted you to be able to apply those skills? The fabric of our existence was shot through with it.”
Joe’s discussion highlights how fear continues to influence behavior even after addiction and underscores the necessity of confronting these fears to progress in recovery.
