In this session on Step 12 AA, Joe tackles the tough reality of addiction and the necessity of belief in recovery. Speaking to both believers and non-believers, Joe recalls that half of the original fellowship were atheists or agnostics, yet they still found a path to recovery. He challenges those in denial to recognize that if they still believe they can control their addiction, they are wasting valuable time.
“The truth is, it’s not my job to convince anyone that they need this program. They have to come to that realization themselves. But if they are truly afflicted, they must understand that there’s little chance of recovery without embracing the program fully. Self-searching, leveling of pride, and confession of shortcomings—these things only happen once they see the need for it.”
Joe underscores the importance of acknowledging one’s powerlessness and the critical need for help. His insights remind us that the work of recovery is not just about the program but also about the humility to accept that we can’t do it alone.
